IMG Reviews Bastion
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games' Ted Bade has posted a new review of Bastion from Supergiant Games and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The action role playing game challenges players to discover the secrets of the Calamity, a catastrophe that shattered the world. The game features more than 40 environments to explore, hand-painted artwork, and more than 10 unique upgradeable weapons.

Here's an excerpt:

The narrator is a major entertaining aspect of Bastion. He comments on just about every action you make the Kid do. It’s quite amusing to hear his comments. Complete a mission, and he comments on this, fall off the edge and he points out that "The Kid" needs to be careful about the edges, defeat a monster and he praises your actions, kill lots of some variety of monster, and he makes a comment, learn a new weapon and he comments on your use of it. The dialog is almost as endless as it is funny! Even if you click on him when there is no reason for it, he will say something like, "sometimes there is just nothing to say." I was impressed that the game producers made comments for just about every possible action, no matter how important or un-important it is toward playing the game. I am sure they put a few comments in there just in case players decided to try something unusual!

Civilization V Open CL Update Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 13 comments

Aspyr Media has announced a new update for Sid Meier's Civilization V. The latest version of the popular world building sim gives owners of the new Mac Pro support for 4k resolution and offers improved performance, a faster game, and fewer crashes.

Mac gamers will now be able to fully take advantage of OpenCL framework, which means better visuals and improved performance for the critically acclaimed strategy game. Additionally, the game should run faster (meaning less waiting in between turns in late-game situations) and fewer crashes.

This update makes Civilization V the only big Mac game that currently supports 4K resolutions on the new Mac Pro. It should automatically download and install for Steam users; Mac App users can head to the Mac App Store to get the update. For even more info on how to take advantage of the new update, check out the knowledge base article over at Aspyr’s Support site.

To celebrate the update Aspyr's Civilization V and its various add-ons are currently on sale for 50% off the regular price.

Epic Targets All Developers With Unreal Engine 4 Release
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Epic recently announced the release of Unreal Engine 4 and the associated Unreal Editor, this time with a price point that makes it available to a wider range of developers. The game engine and source code can be purchased for $19 per month and 5% of a game's gross revenue.

Epic’s goal is to put the engine within reach of everyone interested in building games and 3D content, from indies to large triple-A development teams, and Minecraft creators as well. For $19/month you can have access to everything, including the Unreal Editor in ready-to-run form, and the engine’s complete C++ source code hosted on GitHub for collaborative development.

This is the complete technology we at Epic use when building our own games, forged by years of experience shipping games like Gears of War for Xbox and Infinity Blade for iOS, and now reinvented for a new generation. Having the full C++ source provides the ultimate flexibility and puts developers in control of their schedules and destinies: Whatever you require to build and ship your game, you can find it in UE4, source it in the GitHub community, or build it yourself – and then share it with others.
