Mac Gamer HQ Presents 2013's Best Mac Games
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Mac Gamer HQ recently unveiled its list of 2013's Best Mac Games, proving that 2013 was the year of BioShock Infinite. Other titles on the list include Civilization V: Brave New World, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Fez.

BioShock Infinite is so good it competed for Game of the Year on every platform out there. The story alone can put BioShock Infinite in no matter what Top 10 out there. But the reason it earned the absolute number one spot, is because the gameplay and graphics are almost as good as the story, and that says a lot.

The shooting mechanics are solid and reliable and the graphics are nothing short of impressive. Take Columbia for instance, the game’s flying city. At some points I had to stop and just absorb the breathtaking vistas Columbia had to offer.

And then there’s Elizabeth. Ah, Elizabeth. I have never seen such a fascinating NPC. She brings so much to the table and really helps drive the game home. Her facial animations are so well done, you can feel her sadness, happiness and anger. I’ve never cared for a NPC as much as I did  for her.

Head over to the page below to read more and to check out a video montage of game footage from this year's best.

Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft Previewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Useless Gamers has posted a new preview of Blizzard Enterainment's upcoming Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Planned for release on Mac, Windows, and iPad, the free-to-play virtual card game will allow players to build decks centered around one of the nine Warcraft character classes. Duelists will go head to head in card battles for the chance to win new cards.

The game play itself is like a return to the fluidity of early Magic: The Gathering. The set is small enough that you can quickly learn the cards you need to know, yet diverse enough to have lots of meta strategy to keep the game interesting. The constructed side has already seen many changes in its meta game, and the Arena adds a delicious level of variety and ingenuity into cards that otherwise would rarely see the light of day in constructed. All of this is especially true as Blizzard continues to tweaks the cards, and this is another area where Hearthstone and the DCCG format really shines. Unlike physical CCGs, DCCGs can immediately alter the damage/health stats, mana costs, and even special abilities of every card at once.

The games themselves are fast paced, tactical, strategic, and most of all amazingly fun. The fixed pace of one additional mana crystal a turn resolves the issue of being mana screwed. The small 30 card deck with a max of two of any specific card provides enough reliability that your deck will generally function how it is supposed to. Yet it also has enough flexibility that your deck will still surprise you.
