Patrician IV Sets Sail For Macs In January
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Kalypso Media and Runesoft have announced a January 2014 release for the Mac version of Patrician IV. The fourth installment in the classic trade simulation series puts players in the role of a northern European merchant during the Middle Ages in the time of a thriving Hanseatic League. Starting with common goods players will build their empire to eventually become leader of the trading league.

The huge community of the Patrician series had to wait for a sequel to this classic trade simulation for quite a while. When Kalypso Media was able to secure the trademark and some of the key developers of the original games, it became possible to develop and present a sequel worthy its name. This sequel finally finds its way to OSX enabling hanseatic trading for the first time on Macintosh computers.

Patrician IV is the sequel to the historical trading simulation and strategy series. You are a merchant in northern Europe in the late Middle Ages when the Hanseatic League was flourishing. Your goal is to rise to the most successful and influential member of the Hanse, ultimately being elected Elderman, leader of the trading league. You start bargaining with common goods, build up your own production and establish a merchant fleet. Later on, you will gain more and more political influence and even found new towns.
However, a Hanse merchant's life can also have its dark sides. On your way to power you have to hold your ground against fierce rivals, whom you have to fight with economic competition, price wars or impure means such as sabotage. Will you even engage in piracy?

Features:

  • Complex trade system with trade routes between 26 towns.
  • All towns are displayed in impressive and detailed 3D graphics.
  • Intelligent rivals, dynamic weather and seasons influence gameplay.
  • Be elected mayor of your home town in order to control construction projects like the city wall or special buildings.
  • Compose your own merchant fleet from historical ship models and research new types.
  • Arm your fleet with convoy ships and fight in impressive naval battles against pirates and rivals.

Control Command Escape Reviews SteamWorld Dig
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Control Command Escape recently reviewed SteamWorld Dig from Swedish developer Image & Form. The game is a platform mining adventure in which players assist Rusty, a lone mining steambot, in his quest to assist a mining town in need. They will dig through the earth for riches and uncover the ancient threat lurking below.

Steamworld Dig is something of a plaformer. If, like me, that makes you cringe at the potential hours of mis-timed jumping frustration that lie ahead, worry not. In Steamworld Dig, Rusty literally forges his own path, smashing through the earth to create a path of descent. If, like me, that makes you cringe at the potential hours of minecraft-style aimlessness that lie ahead, worry you not about that either. To put it mildly, the simple act of bashing pickaxe to ground is extremely enjoyable, in the same way that obliterating LEGO is in those other games. Which is good, because everything else the game does is really just about making that sublime experience more fun as you go along.

Your purpose in the game is really two-fold: explore the depths, and collect the precious minerals embedded in the ground to sell in order to buy upgrades that make both of these activities more enjoyable. This is a game that is shamelessly about progression, about delving deeper, and becoming more powerful. It really, really gets it right. In an era where games so callously reward you simply for investing time, or shoehorn so-called RPG mechanics in order to feel like the mere act of playing is not enough to hold your interest, Steamworld Dig instead has a positive feedback loop where everything you do is there simply to reinforce that pick, pick, pick.
