Journey Of The Roach Begins November 5
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Daedalic Entertainment and Koboldgames have unveiled a release date and trailer for the upcoming Journey of a Roach. Launching on November 5, the 2D adventure game drops players into a post-apocalyptic world where they guide Roach Jim and his sidekick Bud from a deserted vault to the Earth's surface. Since the protagonists are roaches the game will have no written or spoken dialog, but will offer a variety of classic point & click puzzles to overcome.

Cockroaches do survive everything, even a nuclear war: This is what story and gameplay of Daedalic Entertainment’s upcoming 3D adventure game Journey of a Roach are about.

Journey of a Roach, developed by the Swiss team of Koboldgames, in co-operation with Daedalic Entertainment, takes players to a sarcastic, post-apocalyptic world: Roach Jim and his sidekick Bud are out and about to find their way from a deserted vault to the Earth’s surface. Players steer them through classic point & click adventure game puzzles. Certain challenges can be overcome by using the roache’s natural features, though: Being roaches, Jim and Bud have the ability to crawl up walls and on ceilings, as well as on items. Players use the third-insect-perspective to guide Jim and Bud through the 3D comic world. There will be no written or spoken dialogues in Journey of a Roach, by the way, as the insects are using their very own, easily understandable signal language.

Jane Jensen Discusses Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary Remake
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Alternative Magazine Online recently posted a new interview with Jane Jensen about the upcoming Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, a 20th anniversary remake of the classic Sierra Online adventure game from the 90's. The 20th anniversary edition will include all new retina display quality visuals and voice recordings, a remastered soundtrack by original composer Robert Holmes, as well as some special edition content.

Is this new version of the game aimed at longtime fans, newcomers, or quite simply anyone who enjoys a good adventure game?

Both longtime fans and newcomers. An ambitious goal, but there you go.

How different will this new version be from the original game?

Well the art, music and voices are all redone, though they are based on the originals. All of the original gameplay and story will be there. We are adding special edition content and also a few new scenes and puzzles.

The 20th Anniversary Edition will feature a brand new voice cast – what are the reasons behind this decision and how happy are you with the new voice recording that was done by Bay Area Sound?

Yes, it’s rather tragic. Unfortunately, the original recordings were lost somewhere along the way, and stripping the audio from the game did not result in acceptable quality. So we had to re-record. The original actors are twenty years older – even if they were interested in reprising their roles, they probably wouldn’t sound the same. Also, the cost of getting those actors wasn’t practical for the budget of this project. When we did GK1 it was one of the very first games to use voice-over, so we got a smoking deal on everyone including SAG rates. Of course now that’s no longer possible.

You’re correct, we used Bay Area Sound for the new recordings.  They’ve done voice recording for a ton of adventure games including Telltale’s The Walking Dead, Sam & Max and Tales of Monkey Island as well as our game Moebius (which has fabulous voice work). They helped us cast great actors true to the spirit of the original cast and yes, I quite like it!

SteamTRAIN 4.3.2 Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Nostalgic Software has announced the release of SteamTRAIN 4.3.2. The latest incarnation of the 1800's era steam train simulation puts players in the roles of engineer and crew.

More about SteamTRAIN:

Your train will travel between stations, up and down grades, negotiate curves, switch tracks, and couple/uncouple cars. Controls include the throttle, boiler pressure, traction sand, air brakes, manual couplers, and track switches. A mixed-weather option includes clear skies, rain, or snow plus day/night -- all in one run.  Spectacular crashes possible with full recovery.  The Setup Mode allows learning, creative challenges and experiments.

MailTrain Mode offers new speed/schedule challenges.  Starting from the east or west terminal, your job is to pickup and deliver mail and newspapers to all stations along the route.  Your schedule is based on pre-chosen degrees of difficulty: number of cars, weather, steepness of slopes, speed of other trains, consumables, etc.  Phantom Express trains appear and vanish several times during a run.  High scores are maintained for local competition.

Dispatcher Mode offers hours of real train operation challenges.  At one terminal, you select locomotive(s) from the roundhouse using the turntable.  Then assemble the marked cars into a passenger, freight or mixed train. Travel to opposite terminal picking up and dropping off cars along the way to attain a score.  Several options add difficulty such as steep grades, mixed weather, plus number and types of cars.  An opposing Robo train launches from the opposite terminal. High scores and settings can be saved.

To download a Mac or PC demo of SteamTRAIN 4.3.2, go to the web site NostWare.com.  Help and Controls files are now available in English on the title window or as separate downloads for possible translation.
Purchase ST 4.3.2 for $12 or as a Free Upgrade for any ST 4.x customers.
