Crossing Over: Analyzing Wineskin
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments
Inside Mac Games has posted the latest article in Justin Ancheta's continuing series. In this latest installment of the series he offers a review of Wineskin, which allows users to tap into the power of WINE to bring Windows games to Mac OS X. The article also includes an overview of how Wineskin works, and a comparison between it and another WINE alternate: CrossOver.
Such a project would seem almost impossible to a casual end-user with an understanding of the vast differences between Windows and Linux (and Mac OS X). Yet, WINE has been stable and reliable enough that some commercial ports of AAA titles and indie games have relied upon WINE to power them (albeit, with some early mixed results). Over the course of my Crossing Over articles, I've focused on the most visible and best supported means of using WINE to run Windows games – specifically, the awesome catalog of GOG's games – running on Mac OS X: CodeWeavers' CrossOver, a dependable and reliable product with deep ties to the WINE developer community. But it wouldn't be fair to ignore another famed alternative, one that's been the product of the tireless efforts of what is practically a one-person operation. Like CrossOver, it allows users to tap into the power and promise of WINE to bring Windows games to Mac OS X. Unlike CrossOver however, it doesn't hide all of the fancy and bafflingly complex machinery underpinning its operation under an easy-to-approach GUI. Additionally, it's completely free. Telltale Games has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming new series, The Wolf Among Us. Based on Bill Willingham's award-winning comic book series FABLES and licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Telltale Games will premiere its new series on a variety of platform including Macs.
"Developing 'The Wolf Among Us' based on the 'FABLES' universe has allowed our studio to build upon all of the hallmarks of what makes our episodic series so engaging for players," said Dan Connors, CEO and Co-Founder of Telltale Games. "Through an evolution of our approach to choice and consequence, we can further explore the complexity of each and every iconic character in a universe rich with untold history from the darkest sides of the storybooks."For more information on the game visit the links below.
The Wolf Among Us Trailer
A consistent New York Times bestseller, 'FABLES' is one of DC Entertainment's longest-running series published under its Vertigo imprint since 2002. With over a dozen Eisner Awards, including Best Writer, Best New Series, and numerous wins for Best Serialized Story, the FABLES universe has become one of the richest mythologies in the world of comics, imagining that characters like Snow White, The Big Bad Wolf and Pinocchio from the world's most beloved storybooks are real - Real, and living among us, with all of their powers intact.
Set prior to the events seen in the first issue of the FABLES comic book series, The Wolf Among Us puts players in the role of Bigby Wolf, a man once more infamously known as The Big Bad Wolf. Now the sheriff of a hidden community in New York City, exiled from the land of fairy tales, Bigby is tasked by the bureaucrat Snow White to keep order within a society of mythical creatures and characters trying to remain undetected in the world of the mundane. From a chain-smoking member of 'The Three Little Pigs,' to a car-stealing Mr. Toad itching for his next wild ride, The Wolf Among Us examines the lives of beings straight from the pages of myth and lore, now trying to survive on the meanest and most run-down streets of New York City.
