Vendetta Online iPad Previewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Guild Software has posted an update to its Vendetta Online Kickstarter campaign, offering a video glimpse of an iPad prototype of the long-running space MMORPG Vendetta Online. In addition to an iPad version, some of the game enhancements planned if the Kickstarter is successful include improved graphics, improved player owned capital ships, larger asteroid fields, more mineral types, more complex space stations, and more persistent NPC types.

I'm excited to bring you the first public preview of Vendetta Online for the iPad, with this demonstration of a prototype build running on an iPad2 connected over wifi. The video is oriented towards both those supporters who are interested in the upcoming iOS version, as well as any new people who may not be familiar with our game.

In the video, I'm actually playing the game through a tiny display on the back of my camera, which makes it much more difficult to see what I'm doing, or touch the right locations sometimes; please bear that in mind when watching me play :).

The prototype version is running pretty well, although we still have a lot of work to do, aside from those remaining features and polish where we're asking for your Kickstarter support (voiceover enhancements, retinal content, etc).

Still, I wanted to give you all some idea of the progress that we've made, and show you how the development is coming along. I hope you're as excited about it as I am.

For those existing players who are more interested in upcoming game changes, please remember that the main intent of this fundraising effort is the "1.9" gameplay goals for all platforms. The plan is to ship the iPad version as soon as we can, and then immediately focus all our attention on gameplay enhancements, to make the 1.9 goals a reality in 2013.

About the Kickstarter:
"We'll be thrilled to bring our intense brand of multi-player space gaming to the iPad family of devices," said John Bergman, CEO of Guild Software. "Our game offers a seamless transition between desktop and mobile, so players can easily switch back and forth between their iPad and their Mac without limitation."

The game made headlines back in March of 2011, when it launched on the Android platform and became the first 3D MMO to make the jump from PC to mobile, quickly climbing to the #1 paid app on the Play Store and taking center stage in a series of Verizon TV commercials. Now the team at Guild Software is ready to make that leap again, and with the help of supporters will deliver an even more polished and premium experience for iPad owners.

All players and platforms share the same universe within Vendetta Online, so iOS users will rub elbows with those on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and WinRT. Beyond iPad support, the Kickstarter could also help fund the next major expansion of the title's gameplay, including enhanced player-owned capital ships and territorial conquest, and is scheduled for completion near the end of 2013.

For over a decade Vendetta Online has blended an intense mix of combat, trading, mining, and exploration to create a distinctive MMO experience. From giant space battles over the dynamic conquest of territory, to player-manufactured capships and guild-owned stations, the title continues to push the envelope of what is possible in an online game.

Guild Software is hoping to reach its $100,000 goal before the February 24 Kickstarter target. Check out the site below to learn more and view the trailer showcasing some of Guild's plans.

The Longevity Of Gratuitous Space Battles
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Joystiq recently posted a new interview with Positech Games' Chris Harris about the continuing success of Gratuitous Space Battles. The space battle simulation focuses on spectacular space battles, allowing players to design ships, arrange them into fleets, and jump right into the action. GSB features single and multiplayer combat as well as a survival mode.

You've been supporting Gratuitous Space Battles since 2009. How long of a life span do you think the game will have?

I think it will continue to sell and to be played at least throughout 2013, which should hopefully take me up to when I can start thinking about a proper sequel. I learned a huge amount working on GSB and on Gratuitous Tank Battles, which was the last game I released, and that means there is a bunch of stuff I know now that I can implement in a proper sequel. Eventually you can't patch a game any more, because you really need to tear it apart and do some major re-engineering, and I plan to start doing that around Christmas, maybe.

Have you been able to make ends meet for yourself and your game development with sales of Gratuitous Space Battles?

Oh, definitely. It has sold vastly more than I expected, which is why I've been happy to justify taking the time to do all the post-release support. I did 62 patches post-release for the game and seven expansion packs, with the outcasts being the last one. I can only do that because the game has continued to be popular and continued to sell.
