IMG Reviews Dogfights 2012

Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of Dogfights 2012 from iEntertainment Network. The World War II combat sim gives players the chance enter the unfriendly skies above a variety of historical terrains in a choice of over 100 aircraft.

Here's an excerpt

And the planes are the game’s strength. One reason you want good peripherals is that the flight dynamics are pretty realistic. If you’re used to playing flight sims which are forgiving, and all the planes fly pretty much the same, stay level, turn easily, and so on, you’ll be in for an adventure here. Each plane definitely flies differently and each have their strengths and weaknesses in terms of survivability, maneuverability, load outs, etc. This helps keep the scenarios fresh even with the similarity of missions discussed above. If you try and fly a P-38 the same as a P-51, you will be in for a rude awakening. You’ll have a chance to fly the major fighter planes of WWII, and again that is really the point of the game.

Features:

  • PC, Mac and Linux release, no DRM.
  • Cut through hordes of enemies while the distant screams of electric guitars glorify your power!
  • One life. Die and you're dead, kid. The stakes are high.
  • Different every time you play. Items and encounters will be random for maximum replay value.

  • Simple to play. The entire game will be playable with just the mouse.
  • Powerful, unique items. There will be rare items which change how you play significantly, like the Silk Sash, which grants the player permanent counter-attack.
  • Affordable. GUTS will retail for $5.
About Big Men Games:
We're a couple of Big Men making games. We live and breathe games. We're hardcore nerds, outcasts; games anchor us to society, they're heat sinks for our imagination. We make games because we feel compelled to. We'll be making games until we're homeless; on our deathbeds, we'll still be making games.

We're heavily inspired by companies like IDEO, and creative visionaries like Jim Henson. Nassim Taleb would call our process "Stochastic Tinkering". Basically we try squillions of ideas in an attempt to find something great, periodically checking in with potential customers for feedback.

GUTS is now in open alpha stage for Mac, Linux, and Windows PCs. Learn more at the link below.

The Sims 3 Supernatural Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

The Maxis Label of Electronic Arts has announced that The Sims 3: Supernatural Expansion Pack is now available for purchase. In The Sims 3 Supernatural, players will "experience the madness of the werewolves’ full moon, the menace of vampires, the magic of witches, and the mischief of fairies as they explore the new world of Moonlight Falls."

“This expansion pack adds a new, magical dimension to The Sims experience, opening up a world of storytelling possibilities,” said Kari St. John, Senior Producer for The Sims Studio. “We’re excited to put creative tools in the hands of our players, giving them the ability to tell contemporary stories inspired by this supernatural theme.”

A cast of supernatural characters introduce fun new gameplay options to the world of The Sims 3. Players can live out supernatural lives as werewolves, fairies, witches and vampires, all of which are completely customizable in the Create A Sim tool. Witches can challenge one another in spellcasting duels or show off their high-flying tricks in the magic broom arena. Werewolves can hunt for collectibles and change at will between their human and wolf forms. Fairies can play pranks and cast beneficial auras, while vampires stalk the night and use their seductive powers to convince other Sims to join their undead ranks.

Aside from a cast of new supernatural Sims, The Sims 3 Supernatural offers many additional gameplay features available to all Sims in the game, supernatural or not. Any player can choose to build their Sim’s skill in alchemy, mixing a variety of potent elixirs that range from love potions to vampiric sunscreen and even zombification brews. Sims will explore the mysterious world of Moonlight Falls as they uncover hidden secrets and collect rare ingredients, allowing them to ultimately create more powerful elixirs. Sims who truly hone this craft can reach the status of master alchemist, and those looking to earn a few extra simoleons can visit the local alchemy shop to sell their concoctions.

In addition to werewolves, fairies, witches and vampires, players can expect to see many more ghosts amidst the supernaturals in their town. For the first time in The Sims 3, players can customize ghost Sims by selecting their cause of death, with options including ‘death by drowning’, ‘death by fire’ and ‘death by meteor.’ The Sims 3 Supernatural also adds a completely new death type, ‘death by jelly beans,’ for those Sims prone to over-indulgence.

Set in a foggy and secluded valley, the new world of Moonlight Falls adds a mysterious backdrop to The Sims 3 Supernatural and introduces new venues for Sims to explore. Supernatural Sims have their own lurk-worthy hangouts, including Varg’s Tavern, where werewolves congregate by the light of the full moon. Sims can also visit the traveler’s caravan to have their fortunes told, or choose the fortune-telling career path as either a legitimate medium or a bogus psychic.

Players can control the lunar cycle in their game for the first time in The Sims 3 Supernatural. With the rise of the full moon, players will notice strange happenings and changes in magical potency as both supernatural and ordinary Sims are affected. Players can customize the duration of the lunar cycle or choose to play with a continuous full moon for an especially peculiar and enchanted game experience.

With The Sims 3 Supernatural, players will discover a rich new world filled with supernatural Sims, curses and charms, unpredictable transformations, high-flying hijinks and other spooky surprises. Embrace the supernatural with the latest expansion pack from The Sims 3 and play with life in magical, mysterious and mischievous new ways.

The Sims 3: Supernatural is available now for $39.99 (USD). Those who don't yet own The Sims 3 can pick up the original game and the Supernatural expansion for the bundle price of $49.99 (USD).

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that beta testing has begun for Heart of the Swarm, the upcoming expansion to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. This time the single player campaign will center on the actions of Sarah Kerrigan, who will "embark on a quest to embrace her powers and make the galaxy fear the zerg once again."

The Heart of the Swarm beta test has begun! This multiplayer-only test will initially be limited to a select group of pro-gamers, members of the press, Arcade contest winners, and shoutcasters. Beta test participants are not under NDA, so you’re likely going to see live streams of matches, screenshots, and casts of impromptu Heart of the Swarm throwdowns starting . . . mmm, NOW!

We will soon be inviting other players to participate in the beta, so be sure you’ve opted in by clicking on the "Beta Profile Settings" under the Account Management section of your Battle.net account (or just click here). Signing up from a Battle.net account that’s actively playing StarCraft II will help your chances of being selected. Note that opting in doesn't guarantee beta access.

We'll also be working with several fansites and community personalities to provide more opportunities to join the beta test, so keep an eye out here and throughout the StarCraft II community for details as they emerge.
