OOTP 13 Updated
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Out of the Park Developments has released the fourth patch for Out of the Park Baseball 13. The major update includes several new features, such as the ability to broadcast the real-time simulation screen to an online league's website, so league members can watch the games being simulated live.

"We're committed to releasing regular updates to OOTP 13 and iOOTP 2012 throughout the baseball season, with new features always being added alongside the usual bug fixes and performance improvements," said Markus Heinsohn, founder and CEO of Out of the Park Developments. "Baseball is such a rich, complex sport that we're always finding new ways to add realism to the armchair GM experience."

Here's what's new in OOTP 13, version 13.4.17:

  • Added a feature that enables online leagues to broadcast the real-time simulation screen to the league website as a real-time report, so league members can watch the league being simulated live
  • Added a "Check teams for roster violations" function to the commissioner home screen
  • Added the ability to edit "Projected Budget"; if set, all future budgets of a team can remain constant
  • Added a "GM only” mode (in manager options) that prevents the human GM from winning the manager of the year award or appearing in the manager-related history reports
  • Added the ability to add leagues to and remove them from existing associations
  • Added a "Reset all Injuries & DL status" function to the league setup screen
  • Added a "Reset Player Fatigue" function to the league setup screen
  • Added a "Reset Player Morale" function to the league setup screen
  • Added a "Reset Compensation Type of all Free Agents" function to the league setup screen
  • Added an option in the league setup screen to disable automatic Hall of Fame inductions
  • Added two new player split stat categories, "As Starter" and "As Reliever / Substitution"; these only work for the current season, though
  • Added coach pictures to the team personnel screen
  • Added player pictures to the in-game player profile screen
  • The payroll between the start of the offseason and the date of free agent filings is now a projection rather than the salaries from the just finished season, resulting in more accurate projected budgets and funds available
  • Shortlisted players are now highlighted by having their name displayed in upper case in player lists
  • Players discovered through international scouting will now accept minor league contracts if they are very young and years away from reaching the majors
  • Improved various aspects of the in-game and roster AI
  • Fixed several bugs

MinMax Games recently announced the release of Space Pirates and Zombies for Mac. The action oriented top down space combat game challenges players to fight zombie infestations across the stars and features 33 ships, 70 unique components, and a physics based combat system.

At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. • 70 unique components to discover and customize your fleet's performance.
  • Totally physics based combat system.
  • Fight Zombie infestations, battling a full zombie ecosystem comprising four stages of un-life.
  • Explore a persistent randomly generated galaxy containing hundreds of star systems.
  • Freedom to explore the galaxy and take on challenges at your own pace.

Drox Operative Previewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

GameBanshee has posted a new preview of Soldak Entertainment's upcoming starship action RPG, Drox Operative. Thr game will put players in the role of an elite starship captain and will feature warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic and evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer

Stats don't just improve your base attributes, they also determine what loot you can use. You "equip" components of varying types, usually fitting into heavy, medium and light classes. While there are no RPG-like skills to be found, the components you have can drastically change your set of abilities. Equip a shield, for instance, and now you have an added layer of protection that recharges over time, while armor plating, while more robust, needs to be repaired. Weapons range from lasers of varying types, to heat-seeking missiles, to nuclear bombs for orbital bombardment, and they all have different strengths and weaknesses. Equipment overall is managed by power requirements - power generators can be used to add capacity, effectively increasing how much you can trick out your intergalactic ride.

Civilization V: Gods & Kings Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story has posted a new review of Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods & Kings, the recently released expansion for the popular civilization building strategy title. The expansion "takes players from founding the first Pantheon of the Gods and spreading religion across the world, to deploying spies in enemy cities to steal information and technology, and much more."

When I started reviewing Gods and Kings it had been a long time since I had played and reviewed the original Civilization V—so long in fact that I couldn’t even tell the old from the new. To keep it simple, here’s a (semi-)quick rundown of the new features:
  • New Game Scenarios: Three new scenarios include the medieval period, the fall of Rome, and Empires of the Smoky Skies, a Victorian steampunk scenario complete with a unique tech tree and technologies.
  • Faith & Religion: A big new addition to Civilization V, Faith lets you choose a Pantheon of the Gods and create Great Prophets to found and spread your customized religion across the world. (Spaghetti Monsterism, anyone? Don’t worry, there’s a mod for that.)
  • A reworked combat system and AI (artificial intelligence) that places more emphasis on a balanced army composition.
  • Naval options: There are two different types of ships types, melee and ranged, making coastal cities vulnerable to a surprise naval attack;
  • Enhanced Diplomacy and Espionage: You can establish embassies at foreign courts for closer ties or clandestine operations. And as religions of the world start settling in and the world moves into the Renaissance, you can unlock spies to spy on foreign cities, steal advanced technologies from your strongest competitors, gain influence with City-States through election rigging, or even start a coup;
  • New City-States: There are two new city-state types—Mercantile and Religious. They can provide new types of quests and, more importantly, give you one more thing to conquer.
  • 27 new units, 13 new buildings
  • 9 new civilizations such as Carthage, Netherlands, the Celts, and the Maya, each with unique buildings and traits.
  • 9 new leaders including William I, Prince of Orange, Boudicca and Pacal the Great.
  • 9 new Wonders and effects including Neuschwanstein, the Great Mosque of Djenne, the Terracotta Army, the Great Firewall, and the Hubble Space Telescope.
