Drox Operative: The Preview Continues
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Space Game Junkie recently posted a new follow up preview of Soldak Entertainment's upcoming starship action RPG, Drox Operative. Based on a new beta version of the game, the article includes details about the changes Soldak has made since testing began. Drox Operative will put players in the role of an elite starship captain and will feature warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic and evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer

Letís first talk about some of the larger changes the game has seen since we last spent time in its universe, both positive and negative. The first major one is now when you choose a specific race, youíre allowed race-specific enhancements. For example, Iím a Drakk in my game ó sorry, havenít tried any other races, too attached to my character at the moment ó and I now have an extra slot for a Drakk crewmember ó which I happened to have ó and a fighter bay, which Iíd never used before. Fighters are fun times, even if their energy requirements are a bit on the high side.

The next major change, to me, is the presentation of the trade screen. Whereas in my original game, it was more difficult to differentiate between light, medium and heavy items, as well as which items might be more rare and therefore more useful, now itís all much easier to see at a glance. Items and slots are better color coded to be much easier to spot (at least it feels easier to me), and now have small colored pips which denote whether an items is normal, uncommon, rare, an artifact and so on. There are now also green plus symbols to denote an item is better than the one you have, but this seems a bit odd, as an item might have a green plus for being better in only one stat. Regardless, itís a definite improvement.

Kung Fu Fighting In Mists Of Pandaria
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Gaming Illustrated has posted a new preview of the monk class in Mists of Pandaria, the upcoming fourth expansion for Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft. Features of Mists of Pandaria will include the introduction of the Pandaren as a playable race, the new martial arts focused Monk class, a level cap increase to 90, and a range of new content to explore.

Of the three specs, mistweaver intrigues me the most. Blizzard has experimented with indirect healing before, such as vanilla shadow priests and the atonement talent added in Cataclysm. However, disregarding the rare fight such as Vorísahj, such experiments lacked the viability of the other more direct approaches to healing. While of course the raw numbers are not finalized yet, the mistweaver appears to finally take the indirect healing concept beyond novelty. First of all, all of the monk attacks give indirect healing while playing a mistweaver, allowing players familiar with the windwalker skill rotation to make an easier transition to healing. Still, the mistweaver still needs to cast direct heals as the situation warrants. The bread-and-butter heal, soothing mists, is a channeled skill that heals a single target over time, with the relatively low mana cost deducted each second spent channeling. The emergency big heal, surging mists, synergizes with soothing mist by becoming an instant cast spell when used while you channel soothing mist. The salient challenge facing future mistweavers lies in the decision of when to switch from indirect to direct healing and will separate the good players from the great.

Diablo III's End Game Sustainability
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 23 comments

Blizzard Entertainment's Bashiok recently authored a new blog post about end game content for the company's action RPG sequel, Diablo III. Acknowledging that the game's current content is unlikely to keep players coming back in the long term, the community manager went on to discuss the company's plans for future patches.

We recognize that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game. There are still tons of people playing every day and week, and playing a lot, but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks. But honestly Diablo III is not World of Warcraft. We aren't going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it's not there right now.

We're working toward 1.0.4, which we're really trying to pack with as many fixes and changes we can to help you guys out (and we'll have a bunch of articles posted with all the details as we get closer), and we're of course working on 1.1 with PvP arenas. I think both those patches will do a lot to give people things to do, and get them excited about playing, but they're not going to be a real end-game solution, at least not what we would expect out of a proper end-game. We have some ideas for progression systems, but honestly it's a huge feature if we want to try to do it right, and not something we could envision being possible until well after 1.1 which it itself still a ways out.
