Mists Of Pandaria To Bring More PvP Action

Blizzard Entertainment recently posted a new in-house Q&A with World of Warcraft game director Tom Chilton. The interview focuses on plans for player vs. player content in the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion. In addition to other new content, Mists will include two new battlegrounds with new gameplay types as well as a new arena.

How is the war being brought back to World of Warcraft in relation to PvP?

Tom Chilton - Well, the best answer to that is that weíre very deliberately trying to get people back out into the world, and so that means on a PvP realm, youíll have more people to kill that are out in the world. Generally speaking, the most fun outdoor PvP is just the spontaneous conflict that happens as a natural result of people being out in the world. Itís not the stuff the designers create for you.

Many players on PvE realms are concerned about being forced to PvP or take part in World PvP when they donít want to, what can you say to them about the plans for this?

Tom Chilton - There are no plans to force PvP on players who are on PvE realms. Their experience shouldnít change and theyíll have the same opportunities for PvP (if they wish to take part) as they do now. Itís also worth noting that the Black Market Auction House has the potential to become a world PvP location for those on PvP realms. Just like the name implies, these are goods being sold out in shady locations away from the prying eyes of guards in the cities. They are not in neutral or safe zones. For PvE realms, itís not going to have that same risk for placing a bid as on a PvP realm (aside from being outbid).

Steven Peeler Discusses Soldak And Drox Operative

RPG France recently posted a new interview with Soldak Entertainment's Steven Peeler. The Q&A includes discussion of the upcoming starship action RPG Drox Operative. The game will put players in the role of an elite starship captain and will feature warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic and evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.

I think the biggest difference between Drox Operative and other space RPGs is that everything takes place in a dynamic sector of the galaxy where multiple races are exploring, colonizing, and fighting for supremacy. This works out differently in every game played depending on which races are present, what planets they colonize, how the monsters react, how diplomacy works out between the various races, and especially what the players decide to do about everything. Letís go over an actual sequence of events that happened in one of my play tests a few days ago.

Things were going well. The most powerful race in the game, at least that I knew of, was the Lithosoid. I had solved all of their local problems: civil unrest, a plague or two, and some pesky monsters. They liked me so much we agreed to an alliance. That apparently went straight to their heads, because they soon got themselves into a two front war with the Drakk and the Overlords. I struggled to keep them in the lead and finally helped destroy their two enemies. I was sure I had secured the sector for them.

Then I received a message that they had failed sabotaging a Dryad planet. I didnít even know that the Dryads were present in the sector. This was also a huge sign of the dangers coming my way. You see, the Dryads are pretty peaceful and yet really dangerous. What happens is they usually cultivate many alliances, which is great until you end up on the wrong side of all of those alliances. I decided to break off my alliance with the Lithosoid right then and there. Soon after, I located the Dryad and bought contacts with their two allies. All three of them were more powerful than my ex-ally! A short while after that, the Dryad and their allies declared war on the poor Lithosoid. The Lithosoid didnít stand much of a chance without an Operative backing them.

The cool thing about all of this is that it is completely dynamic, you arenít likely to see the same exact scenario again, I had the freedom to make real choices to navigate the diplomatic landscape, and there were probably many viable alternatives that I could have taken.

Divinity: Original Sin Previewed

IGN has posted a new preview of Larian Studios' upcoming Divinity: Original Sin, a new role playing game for Mac and Windows set in the world of the Divinity Series. The article includes discussion of the game's unique cooperative conversation options, the depth of its combat options, and Larian's plans to provide a full featured editor.

This kind of incredibly in depth development extends to the combat, too. Despite being turn based, itís impressively fluid, based heavily around use and manipulation of the elements. Cast a rain spell and youíll create a puddle that can then be electrified, evaporated or frozen, each with their own appropriate effects. Thereís even the threat of slipping up on the ice, knocking yourself over for a turn. Despite being relatively simple with its elements, itís obvious that there is that breadth of experimentation that made, say, Magicka so successful.

All this leaves Larian with an incredibly versatile engine that allows players to pick up and move around anything that isnít nailed down, creating make shift barricades in the middle of a fight, or just shoving anything grabbable into their inventory. Gamers are hoarders, after all. Couple that with a game that recognises that hoarding instinct, and plays off it, and suddenly you feel awfully involved in this world. Like youíre a part of it. And thatís why we play RPGs, after all. To lose ourselves to a world.

Fray Coming June 19, Cinematic Unveiled

Brain Candy recently released a new cinematic trailer for the company's upcoming simultaneous turn based strategy game, Fray. In addition to the new trailer the company also revealed the game would be released on June 19, 2012.

Players can soon enter the dystopian future of 2098 where Earthís remaining resources are controlled by mega-corporations and a desperate humanity seeks refuge in virtual realms. In combat module Fray, players control a squad of 4 characters and fight in turns comprised of a definition phase and a resolution phase. Players give each member of their squad orders during the definition phase: shoot, move, deploy equipment, use personal bonuses or powerful team bonuses and then watch the results of their actions during the resolution phase: seeing how opponents strike back and who best anticipated and trapped the other teams.
