Counter Strike: Global Offensive Gets August 21 Release Date
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Valve has announced an August 21 release date for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The title will expand upon the team-based gameplay made popular in the original Counter Strike and will feature new maps, characters, and weapons as well updated versions of classic CS content.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."
Counter Strike: Global Offensive will be available for $15.

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has announced the release of beta patch 1.5.0 for its sci-fi RTS sequel, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. The update introduces the Arcade, a new custom game tool featuring streamlined search, ratings, instructions, and patch notes for the various custom offerings. The update will also add a new streaming launcher for patches and a variety of editor changes and improvements.

The Patch 1.5.0 Beta introduces an entirely new Battle.net experience: the Arcade. The Arcade offers exciting new ways to find and play your favorite custom games -- and discover new favorites too -- with the option to search for games based on categories including genre, star ratings, release date, and more. After you’ve found a game that you’re interested in, the new Game Info page will provide you with all the information you need to know before you dive in, including a description, screenshots, instructions, patch notes, tutorials, as well as star ratings and reviews provided by your fellow players. The Open Games list will help keep wait times down by displaying games that are waiting for players too.

Patch 1.5.0 also introduces a new streaming launcher that should make download, installation, and patching times shorter than ever before, as well as an incredible array of editor changes and improvements.

When you log into the beta, you’ll find the Arcade has games available to play, because the industrious StarCraft II custom gaming community has already been hard at work crafting, refining, and posting their creations.

Blizzard's Bashiok On 35 Small Improvements For Diablo III
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment's Bashiok recently took the time to address 35 fan requests for small changes to its fantasy action RPG, Diablo III. The post covers a variety of issues, including some which will apparently be addressed in the 1.0.3 patch.

3) As an advanced player, I want the option to show numerical cooldowns on my abilities so that I can better time them.

We're really trying hard to avoid quickly bloating the game options, and since this would be an option, we're cautiously approaching it and a few other toggle/option requests. Short answer, probably not right now.

7) As a Wizard, I want to see a buff icon for "Magic Weapon" and "Familiar" so that I can know its current status.

We're adding a buff icon for Magic Weapon in 1.0.3. We don't intend to add one for Familiar as it's a physically visible object on your screen. Magic Weapon was actually impossible to tell if it was up in quite a few cases. We'll be continuing to watch skills and buff icons, though, as there could be some situations where we need to expose more.

15) As a player, I want to see what difficulty my friends are playing so that I can know if I'll be interested in joining them.

We have some great social window and quick join improvements coming in 1.0.3, including showing the game difficulty they're in, who else is in the game with them, a bunch of just nice usability and UI changes, as well as making the quick join window smarter by limiting who is shown to you by level and difficulty.
