Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of BioShock 2, Feral Interactive's soon to be released Mac version of the genetically enhanced role-playing shooter. Developed by 2K Marin, 2K Australia, 2K China and Digital Extremes, and published by 2K Games for games consoles and PC, BioShock 2 is the sequel to BioShock.
Here's an excerpt:
As far as shooting and combat go, Bioshock 2 has a number of changes. Not only can you dual wield plasmids and weapons, as a Big Daddy you feature a significantly more fearsome arsenal than Jack ever did. Tommy gun? Try chain gun. Crossbow? Try Spear gun. Every weapon is excellently modeled and deliciously powerful. Like the original, every weapon has 3 different kinds of ammo, and also 3 different upgrades you can choose at the Power to the People stations. The camera has also seen an update, now being a video camera. The same research ideas apply with different levels of research granting you bonuses for your character, damage or even some special gene tonics. All the original plasmids and gene tonics return, as well as a few new ones like the nifty Scout plasmid which allows you to go invisible, or the hard to get Fountain of Youth tonic which regenerates health and EVE while standing in water.Bioshock 2 will be released on March 29. Blizzard Insider 43: How To Build A Better Diablo Cinematic
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
Blizzard Entertainment has released episode 43 of its Blizzard Insider feature, this time focusing entirely on the opening cinematic for the much anticipated Diablo III action RPG. Vice Presiden of Art and Cinematic Development Nick Carter, and 2D Art Director Chris Thunig offered insight into the hard work that went into creating the cinematic.
How do you go about bringing specific characters to life? Where do all the details come from?Learn more at the site below.
Blizzard Insider 43
Chris Thunig: We use lots of real world reference. Early in the process various members of the team will act out the cinematic scenes on camera. This process works a lot like shooting live action, where actors take cues from directors and we get tons of takes. We even use props, as things like football shoulder pads can give actors a sense for the weight and bulk of angelic armor. People tend to move differently with costumes on, and you see this in their gestures and body language. All this footage goes to the artists and animators to use as reference.
When it comes time to create and animate the characters for the cinematic itís a matter of getting the software to live up to the artistry. To aid the process we will sometimes look for reference to realize even seemingly trivial things. I remember we found a Blizzard employee with a haircut similar to Leahís and we put her in front of a fan so the artists could study how her hair moves in the wind. Long render hours and many iterations later we head into the final polishing stage where a lot of tweaking and detailing takes place, and we try and give it that extra push that makes it a Blizzard-quality piece.
