Wasteland 2 Kickstarter Page Debuts, Mac Version Possible
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

inXile Entertainment has announced that Wasteland 2 is now live on Kickstarter for fan funding. A sequel to the classic post-apocalyptic RPG of the 80's, the game will be a top down, turn-based, tactical RPG that the developers promise will "stay true to its roots." If the company hits the $1.5 million funding target it promises to bring the game to the Mac platform as well.

"I have waited a long time to make this game, and I now have my dream team put together to help make it a reality," said Brian Fargo of inXile Entertainment. "I had the main storyline created by Jason Anderson, the co-creator of Fallout™. We have Mike Stackpole and Alan Pavlish aboard who were the main designers of the original Wasteland™. Mark Morgan is doing the music and he composed the score for Fallout™1 and 2. And we have the fantastic talent of Andree Wallin helping with the concept art."

The original Wasteland, released in 1988 has been widely held as one of the top RPGs of all time. IGN named it one of the top 25 PC games of all time and it was short-listed for inclusion in the Smithsonian Institution’s current “Art of the Computer Game” exhibition. inXile has stated that Wasteland 2 will stay true to its roots. The game promises to be a top down, turn based, tactical RPG, similar to its predecessor. The player will be forced into moral dilemmas and will need to deal with the consequence of their actions throughout the game. Not all decisions are a net positive but it’s up to the player to decide which course they take.

With Wasteland 2 being fan funded, inXile has said they will be focused on working closely with the established Wasteland fan community and their Kickstarter backers to create the game the fans are asking for. To Brian Fargo, this is more than just a sequel to Wasteland; “This is a chance to move the power back to the developers, allowing us to make genres of games that publishers just will no longer support.” Brian Fargo went on to say, “This Wasteland sequel exists only because of the fans have pushed us to make it happen. As excited as we are to make the game, it's the fans' excitement that matters the most, and their quotes say it all."

To do this game right, InXile needs to raise $1 million, but you'll notice the funding request is $900,000 and that is because Brian Fargo has offered to fund the last $100,000 if need be. That’s a lot of money needed, but not when compared with the budgets of most full scale RPGs made today. The original game sold over 100,000 copies—on the Apple ][ and Commodore 64 platforms back in the day. If everyone who played it then backs the project at the most basic level, the game is on.

But InXile is looking ahead to what it can do if you all back this project in force. At $1.25 million, the money will go primarily into making the world bigger, adding more maps, more divergent stories and even more music.

At $1.5 million, the world gets even bigger. You’ll have more adventures to play, more challenges to deal with, and a greater level of complexity to the entire storyline. We’ll add more environments, story elements, and characters to make the rich world come alive even more. We will even be able to bring Wasteland 2 to OS X for Mac lovers. And after $1.5 million the sky is the limit.

The Darkness II Officially Announced
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

TransGaming has officially announced a partnership with 2K Games to bring the The Darkness II to the Mac. The first person shooter draws on the horror genre to add chills to the tried and true action formula. The game is inspired by the comic book series from Top Cow Productions, putting players in the role of Jackie Estacado, a man who must come to grips with his destructive powers to stay alive.

“TransGaming and 2K Games are committed to delivering the most immersive and innovative entertainment experiences to consumers, ” commented Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming Inc. “We’re pleased to expand our partnership with 2K Games and bring one of their most anticipated titles to Mac. The Darkness II offers ground-breaking gameplay and Mac gamers will love stepping into its highly stylized, narrative-driven action.”

The Darkness II continues the story of Jackie Estacado, head of a New York crime family and wielder of an ancient and brutal force of chaos and destruction known as the Darkness. Introducing unique Quad-Wielding™ combat and four-person cooperative gameplay distinct from the first-person campaign, The Darkness II breaks the mold of traditional first-person shooter titles.

The partnership with 2K Games represents an expansion of the existing relationship between TransGaming Inc. and Take-Two Interactive Software. The relationship began with Rockstar Games and the successful launch of the Mac version of their acclaimed Grand Theft Auto Trilogy.

Key Features:

  • 4-Player Co-op Campaign - Play as one of four unique characters each capable of wielding weapons infused with Darkness powers.
  • Quad-Wielding Chaos - Slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with the Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons, adding a new dimension to the FPS category.
  • Harness an Unstoppable Power - Master the Demon Arms and summon the powers of The Darkness for even more explosive gameplay.
Kill the Lights - The vicious powers of The Darkness manifest only in the shadows so use the environment to your advantage and watch out for enemies who will use light as a weapon.
  • Intense and Personal Journey - Experience a dark, twisted and gripping story written exclusively for the game by acclaimed comic book author Paul Jenkins whose credits also include The Incredible Hulk, Wolverine, and the original The Darkness game.
  • Distinctive Graphic-Noir Style - Graphic novel shading and color combined with the dramatic lighting of film noir pays tribute to the source material and brings the pages of the comic series to life. Inspired by the popular comic book series created by Top Cow.
Requirements:
  • Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) / Mac OS X 10.7.2 (Lion) or higher
  • Intel Core 2 Duo or better

Gratuitous Tank Battles Pre-Order, New Trailer
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Positech Games has announced that its upcoming Gratuitous Tank Battles is available for pre-order, with access to the beta version for those who order now. Positech also released a new gameplay trailer. The upcoming new title is described as a hybrid of real time strategy and tower defense, featuring online elements, customizable units, and a built-in map editor for custom creations.

Gratuitous Tank Battles is coming to the PC and Mac, developed by Positech Games, makers of Democracy, Kudos and of course Gratuitous Space Battles. Gratuitous Tank Battles is an RTS/Tower Defense hybrid with online elements and customisable units. The player can take the role of the defender or the attacker in a series of top-down explodey battles. A built-in map editor will allow easy sharing of custom maps and defensive challenges with other GTB players in a similar fashion to GSB's challenge system.
GTB takes place in an alternate reality where the 'central powers' never surrender and the 'great war' continues for two hundred years. Soldiers still fight in the trenches of the Somme, although rifles have (mostly) become laser rifles and giant armored mechs stride across no-mans land. The two great armies continue to fight with patriotic zeal and little memory of who Franz Ferdinand was and what happened to him. One thing is certain: It will all be over by Christmas 2114.
