New EVE Online Video Available
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

CCP Games has released a new video showcasing the company's sci-fi MMO, EVE Online. Titled 'The Awakening,' the new video features a new pilot "presented with a glimpse of the dangerous and opportunity-filled future that awaits them."

The world of EVE Online centers on a dense cluster of star systems connected to one another by a vast network of stargates. These gates allow for near instantaneous travel between linked star systems, of which there are over 5,000 in the network. The core of this cluster, called New Eden by its inhabitants, is controlled by four major empires that constantly vie with one another.

These core powers are the Amarr Empire, Caldari State, Gallente Federation and Minmatar Republic. Beyond the interior of the cluster lie the outer regions, lawless zones where the independent space captains of EVE, the capsuleers, contend with one another for supremacy. Outside even these perilous regions exist the Jove Empire, an enigmatic power that rarely shows itself, and the mysterious realms of wormhole space. The capsuleers constantly seek means to exploit the planets, systems and regions of New Eden, and their power is on the rise.

BioShock 2 Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 11 comments

Mac|Life has posted a new review of BioShock 2, Feral Interactive's upcoming Mac version of the genetically enhanced role-playing shooter. Developed by 2K Marin, 2K Australia, 2K China and Digital Extremes, and published by 2K Games for games consoles and PC, BioShock 2 is the sequel to BioShock.

As you explore the beautiful, broken art deco hallways and corridors of Rapture, you’ll encounter a wide variety of enemies determined to do you in. Fortunately, you’ll have the opportunity to take them all down with the help of a number of powerful weapons, including a massive mining drill, bolt or spear gun, and a number of customizable weaponized genetic modifications, all of which are powered by compounds and ammunition found throughout the game.

The excellent, suspense-filled single-player campaign unravels over the course of several hours, and is filled with myriad twists and turns that reveal more about the hero and the BioShock universe. Additionally, BioShock 2 introduces an online multiplayer component, which feels distinct from most other shooters by keeping the special Plasmid attacks and machine-hacking abilities from the campaign.

Runestones Removed From Diablo III
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

In a new blog post, Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson outlined some of the changes coming to the beta version of the action RPG sequel. Among the changes is skill categorization, user interface improvements, and the removal of runestones as physical items.

Another thing we strive for in our games is “concentrated coolness,” and while rune quality levels made sense when we were attempting to itemize them throughout the game, they make far less sense as runes are unlocked through the UI. We didn’t want to get back into a situation where you’re clicking a button to pump points into skills. It’s far more concentrated (and cool) when your rune choices have a single and powerful benefit to your skill choice. The new skill rune system does not have ranks, and we’ve instead made each around the equivalent to what the rank 4 or 5 rune was previously. One click, you make your rune choice, and you get an explosive benefit to that skill. That feels a lot cooler.

Runes have been by far the biggest design hurdle we’ve had in the game, and as you know we’ve been continually iterating on them. We fully expect that some of you will be disappointed that runes won’t be part of the itemization system. Internally, it took us a long time to let go of that notion too and stop trying to force them into being items, and instead embrace the intent of the system. Integrating runes with the skill system directly gave us a bunch of great benefits, and even without runes we’re launching with more item types than Diablo II had. We knew we were making the right choice by letting go of runes as items and focusing on the core objective of the system: to customize your skills in awesome ways.
