Tropico 3: Gold Edition Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

Feral Interactive has released Tropico 3: Gold Edition for the Mac. Developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media for Windows, Tropico 3: Gold Edition is a re-imagining of the classic construction and management simulation Tropico.

Tropico 3: Gold Edition is a combination of strategic city-builder and humorous political simulator that invites players to reign as El Presidente, dictator of the resource-rich Caribbean nation of Tropico. To govern is to choose, and as players build their island’s infrastructure, manage the economy and keep competing factions on side, they will have plenty of opportunity to find out whether they prefer to rule with a velvet glove or an iron fist.

To maintain their grip on power, players will need to create a cult of personality around El Presidente, composing his silver-tongued speeches, manipulating the media and building monuments in his honor. El Presidente’s character will determine the way he is regarded by the people, and whether he is inclined to run Tropico as a vacation paradise, a police state, an industrial metropolis, or all three!

Each of the 15 missions in Tropico 3: Gold Edition’s campaign mode challenges players to develop a single island, each with its own victory conditions, within a set time frame. Tropico 3: Gold Edition includes the Absolute Power expansion pack, which contains a completely new 10-mission campaign, additional islands and the ability to issue “Megalomania” edicts such as “Print Money”.

Oil Rush Available Now
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Unigine Corp. has announced that the global war for oil in the flooded post-apocalyptic world of Oil Rush is now available for Mac, Linux, and Windows PCs. The real-time naval strategy game combines elements of classic real time strategy titles with the action of tower defense games.

Iceberg CEO Erik Schreuder says: “We are thrilled to see that Oil Rush is now finished and look forward to the multi-platform release on PC, Mac and Linux in the coming days and weeks. Oil Rush is a very addictive and great looking strategy game that gives the genre a boost and a twist at the same time. UNIGINE has already proven a valuable partner for our company and I can surely see us extending our business in the near future, so keep an eye out.”

Oil Rush is a real-time naval strategy game that combines the strategic challenge of a classic RTS with the sheer fun of Tower Defence, while featuring state-of-the-art visuals. The game is based on group control: the player doesn’t have to micro-manage every unit but has control over all important aspects of tactics, strategy and economy. Capture, upgrade and defend floating production platforms and oil rigs. Discover new technologies and send groups of naval and air units into battle to capture enemy platforms and oil rigs.

Earth, post-nuclear war. Melted ice caps have raised the sea level dramatically, changing the face of the planet forever. The last survivors live on the remaining spots of dry land and floating sea platforms. Remnant armies have evolved into rival factions still fighting for power, turning the planet into a massive battlefield, the key to which is oil [a.k.a. black gold ;)].

Key Features:

  • State-of-the-art visuals powered by the UNIGINE engine
  • Dynamic and fun gameplay - furious enemies, massive battles, rampant attacks!
  • 16 missions of single-player campaign offering variety of tactics and environments, from the half-flooded jungles to icebergs, slowly melting as they float in the cold northern seas.
  • 15 maps for multiplayer battles, each with multiple winning strategies
  • Multi-player over LAN and Internet
  • Multi-platform - Windows/Mac OS X/ Linux (buy once, play everywhere)
  • Mod SDK is planned for release shortly

Frozen Synapse Post Mortem Revealed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Gamasutra has posted a post mortem article examining the development of Mode 7 Game's Frozen Synapse. Mode 7's Paul Taylor explained the process of creating the game and discussed the company's design philosophy. The game features both single and multiplayer action, a variety of guns, hand crafted maps, and a map editor.

"My motivation was highest to make a game that had interesting decisions the whole time," developer Ian Hardingham told Taylor, while working on the game.

"A couple of big work-for-hire contracts enabled us to adopt a 'when it's done' attitude to gameplay iteration. We took very low salaries and kept overheads to a minimum, allowing our focus purely to be on making the best game we could," Taylor writes.

Ideas were tested and discarded if they did not fit the core gameplay -- but "having time to explore them was vital," writes Taylor.
