Craig Stern Discusses Telepath RPG: Servants Of God

True PC Gaming recently posted an interview with SinisterDesign.net's Craig Stern about the upcoming Telepath RPG: Servants of God. The tactical RPG will be available to purchase on February 14, 2012 and will feature turn-based combat, dozens of abilities, a party of characters to interact with, and a steampunk fantasy setting.

Please talk about developing the art style, level design and music for Telepath RPG: Servants of God.

Aside from the problem of having to build each level by hand, designing levels for Telepath RPG: Servants of God was a blast. I firmly believe in the power of scattering secrets around a game world. When you notice something unusual and suddenly a whole new area opens up that the game never told you about and that has nothing to do with your progression through the plot, it suddenly fills the world with a sense of possibility. Thatís been my favorite part of designing the levelsóitís right up there with designing crypts filled with nasty traps, puzzles, and hidden passageways.

I loved writing the music for Telepath RPG: Servants of God, too. I spent a lot of time researching Middle Eastern music and playing around with an oud to get a good, authentic sound for the areas around Ravinale. A lot of the soundtrack results from a mishmash of my musical influences, many of them classical. I managed to convince an ex-girlfriend of mine to do operatic singing on a couple of the tracks, which sounds pretty awesome. Probably my favorite little-known fact about the music of Telepath RPG: Servants of God, though, is that ďAgainst the Cult,Ē the track that plays during the prison break sequence, was originally conceived as an orchestral reimagining of the Flash music video ďOwlsĒ by TheWeebl. (You know, the one where Simon Cowell transforms into the King of the Beavers? No? Never mind.)

I admit, the art style for Telepath RPG: Servants of God is pretty unusual. It takes place in a birdís-eye overhead view, with vector graphics for characters and special effects and raster for everything else. In truth, I made these choices because they made it easier for me to create a lot of content with smooth animations and minimal effort, rather than out of some deep desire for a consistent aesthetic.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit Reviewed

Appletell has published a new review of Spiderweb Software's Avernum: Escape From the Pit. The game is a "ground-up rewrite of Avernum" which includes a new engine and new graphics. As in the original, Avernum: Escape From the Pit follows the adventures of individuals exiled to a mysterous underground realm. Appletell gave the game a score of 5 out of 5.

From the review:

The first thing you do after starting a new game is make up to four characters by either using the party thatís already made for you or making your own. The only choices you can make are name, appearance, and class (which determines what skills the characters have at the start of the game). While you will have many ways to customize each character as you play, you arenít given a lot of choices at the beginning.

This is a good thing, as having to decide what your characters should be good at before you play is kind of like ordering dessert before the appetizers have arrived. Having to know about the game before you can play the game so you donít make mistakes making your characters is rather silly, and itís good that you just pick the general class type and start playing.

Psychonauts Analyzed

Mac|Life has published a new review of Double Fine's Psychonauts. Brought to Mac in partnership with TransGaming, the action adventure title follows the story of a young psychic named Razputin on a quest to join an elite group of international psychic secret agents. Mac|Life gave the game a score of 3.5 out of 5.

From the review:

As expected, itís an oddball tale, and while the real-world campgrounds serve as a home base, much of the action takes place inside the twisted minds of advisors and other deranged folks. As such, youíll face scenarios as diverse as battling through a military war zone, leading a rebel (fish) charge as a giant monster in an underwater metropolis, and stealthily sneaking through an idyllic suburban neighborhood while enemy agents pose as repairmen and spout hilarious quips.

The adventure blends platform-hopping navigation with the initial ability to toss psychic punches at foes, but quickly throws more focus onto Razís burgeoning array of special powers, including fiery attacks, using his mind to toss items at foes, and even the ability to briefly turn invisible. These psychic skills are regularly called upon during the lengthy missions, and are used for everything from attacking enemies to sneaking around and solving puzzles, giving the game a startlingly original and very unique feel long after its debut.
