6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

CCP Games' Crucible, the fifteenth free expansion for the company's sci-fi MMO EVE Online has been released. The expansion includes changes to graphics, interface, and game mechanics, with over three dozen updated and improved features based on feedback and challenges put forth by its player community.

Within EVE’s eternal crucible of warfare, politics and industry, even the most passionate and skilled are tested. EVE Online: CRUCIBLE pumps the bellows, turning up the heat on the space combat experience in EVE Online. In the factional shipyards, new ships have been forged to expand the reach of war and evolve the tactics of space engagement while existing vessels have been reimagined, bringing greater balance and diversity to large and small scale conflicts.

This winter, CRUCIBLE evolves the graphics, interface and game mechanics with over three dozen updated and improved features based on feedback and challenges put forth by its players.

This is EVE re-forged.

The global melting-pot/universe of player personalities sees a melting pot of improvements to match as CCP laser focuses on getting back to basics with its infamous internet spaceships.

Some of the major improvements players are lauding:

  • Four fan-designed battlecruisers built to deliver swift and effective destruction to the opposition
  • Over a dozen stunningly remade nebulae, changing the look and feel of EVE's universe completely
  • Other fan-favorite graphical improvements such as engine trails, warp tunnels and shadows
  • Time dilation in fleet flights -- adjusting time itself to keep fairness alive when hundreds of players face off against each other
  • 3 new factional captain's quarters with unique, artistic looks
  • A significant ship rebalancing effort, to bring greater diversity and balance to large and small scale conflicts
  • A lot of small changes -- from fonts to UI to Doomsday devices to PvE tweaks

Vendetta Online Update Fixes Bot Drops
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Guild Software has released a new patch for its massively-multiplayer online space strategy game, Vendetta Online. The latest update brings the game to version 1.8.199 and includes a variety of new updates, bug fixes, and content additions.

Changes offered in the recent update:

  • Bots no longer drop cargo if they are not damaged at all by players. If a player damages a bot but does not destroy it, cargo is still dropped.
  • Nation choices are now randomized in the Character Creation menu.
  • Added support for Android devices with PowerVR graphics.
  • Further reduced raw materials needed to manufacture the Trident.
  • Trident Type M cargo expanded to 600cu.
  • Mass of Fused Composite Plating significantly reduced.
Bot Drops -
We had developed a bit of an issue with people "mining" bot drops by having NPCs fight one another, and keeping the sector artificially "alive" by flying out into the distance. This was both troublesome for my ability to create rare drops that couldn't easily be mined, as well as a load on the server (some of these NPC battles are pretty intensive, meaning server resources are being used where no one is actually playing).

Thus, the solution was to have bots only drop items when they have sustained damage from a player character. We didn't do that originally, in the interest of maintaining a kind of "equality" between PC and NPC characters, but it really wasn't worthwhile given the later tradeoffs.

Trident Changes -
Hopefully this will make the tridents more easily constructable. We are planning more capship changes, but all development has to be juggled by immediate priority. To get a more complete list of what changed in the Trident Type M build tree, see the Suggestions Forum thread.

Chicken Invaders 4 Christmas Edition Available
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

InterAction Studios has announced the release of the Christmas Edition of Ultimate Omelette, the fourth episode in its Chicken Invaders series. The game puts players at the forefront of a battle against invading intergalactic chickens, bent on revenge against the human race for its oppression of Earth chickens.

"InterAction studios has a long-standing tradition of creating Christmas-themed editions of our games, and Chicken Invaders® is no exception," explained Konstantinos Prouskas, founder of InterAction studios. "For this episode, we've pulled out all the stops to create the most immersively festive experience to date. From the wonderful Christmas rendition of the opening main theme, to the attacking chickens dressed up as Christmas elves, to the squawk-tastic holiday conclusion, everything is bursting at the seams with Christmas spirit."

In this episode, the chickens have constructed a gigantic cannon capable of launching planet-scale eggs against Earth, with the ultimate goal of destroying Christmas by encrusting humanity in an impenetrable wall made of egg white. Joined by an unlikely ally, players will travel to foreign, unexplored galaxies in an effort to locate and destroy the egg cannon before it reaches Earth.

The Christmas Edition is characterized by festively dressed chickens which attack relentlessly in colorful groups and meticulously choreographed formations. The chicken fray is punctuated by fights against massive enemies disguised as Christmas elves, Santas, and other well-known holiday figures. Major enemies are also appropriately decorated with rows of blinking Christmas lights. Christmas ornaments, bows, ribbons, bells, and holly fly everywhere during the heat of battle. Floating Christmas gifts can be collected in order to extend the arsenal at the player's disposal. There's even a suitably festive snow blizzard - in deep space! On-screen action is accompanied by original renditions of popular Christmas carols, composed specifically for this episode.

City Of Heroes: Freedom Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

PC Gamer has posted a new review of NCSoft and Paragon Studios' super hero themed MMO, City Of Heroes: Freedom. The review returns to the venerable MMO to examine the changes to the game since the recent switch to a free to play model. PC Gamer gave CoH:F a score of 86 out of 100.

From the review:

City of Heroes: Freedom is one of the most generous free-to-play games ever. Bad news for crime. Great news for us.

If you’ve ever bought it in the past, you keep everything you unlocked. Even new players can access almost everything. Pet classes get the shaft and have to be bought, as do a few other archetypes and powers, but most are available. So are most costume pieces aside from a few auras and themed sets, and both Hero and Villain factions. The Going Rogue expansion is the only major lock-out, although you can still wander its questless streets if you feel like taking a boring holiday from the fight.

Get into the world itself and things keep getting better. City of Heroes hasn’t had a visit from Deathwing, but the leap in quality of the opening areas at least is a Cataclysm-level update… uh… in a good way. For starters, while Paragon has always understood the importance of making you feel awesome from Level 1, the opening missions now serve up stories that let you do proper hero stuff, not just painstakingly sweeping every last bloody warehouse from Atlas Park to Kings Row.
