Soldak Blog: Dynamic Space Environments
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Another new Soldak Entertainment blog post offers a discussion of the dynamic environments players will encounter in the company's upcoming sci-fi action game. A variety of events ranging from solar flares to nuclear war will have an impact on the galaxy in which players will struggle for victory.

Soldak's as yet untitled game is described as "Master of Orion from a mercenary captain's point of view." It will place players in a dynamic galaxy and give them to the chance to build their fortune and influence the balance of power between opposing races.

In space there are a lot of things that make up the environment: stars, planets, asteroids/comets, and people on the planets. All of these things kind of have a life of their own. They don't just statically sit there. Things happen, sometimes good and sometimes bad. I think instead of explaining too much about the environment I'm just going to give a bunch of examples of how the environment in our space game will make things interesting.

Some examples of environment related events/quests:

Stars: solar flares, super novas, and gamma ray bursts.
Planets: mega drought, super volcano, earthquakes, super swarms, and killer plants.
Asteroids: usually not a problem until they head towards a populated planet.
People: riots, civil war, plagues, power grid failure, nuclear war, and mutants.

IMG Reviews Dragon Age 2
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of Bioware's Dragon Age 2. Coming to Mac gamers courtesy of TransGaming's Cider Portability Engine, the game puts players in the role of the legendary Hawke and gives them the chance to control the story of the champion's rise to power.

Here's an excerpt from the review:

Battles are filled with explosions, meaty thuds, blood spatters, screams, yells, growls, groans, purrs from lust demons, and so much more you won't ever notice. Even the voice acting is high-quality, some slurring notwithstanding. It's very rare to see emotion properly demonstrated in video games, and there's plenty of that in Dragon Age 2. Of course, you'll still likely need the subtitles activated to understand some of the random conversations you walk by, but even those are easy to listen in on if you find the random faceless NPC making the noise.

Penny Arcade Adventure Game Series Lives Again
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Penny Arcade recently revealed that the cancelled third episode of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness has a second chance at life with a new developer, Zeboyd Games. The game based on the comic series allowed players to join with Gabe and Tycho for a series of zany adventures.

The latest installment, we're told, "will take the series in a new direction, or maybe a really old direction, with a retro 16-bit RPG look and style of play."

"We originally had the idea of an NES-style RPG last year, but we couldn't find the right people to do it," said Robert Khoo of Penny Arcade. "After we saw Zeboyd's Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World, we knew we didn't have to look around anymore. Zeboyd was a perfect match."
Episode 3 is scheduled to release next year. There is no word yet on the possibility of a Mac version. Learn more at the Kotaku page linked below.
