Avadon: The Black Fortress Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

GameBanshee has posted a new review of Spiderweb Software's latest RPG, Avadon: The Black Fortress. The first chapter of a new saga, the game puts players in the role of a spy and warrior tasked to defend the homeland from its many enemies. The game features four different character classes, dozens of sidequests, hundreds of items to discover, and many different possible endings.

Similarly, the game spends much of the story highlighting what being a Hand of Avadon – the position bestowed upon the player from the start – really means. Because the alliance is not the steadiest, it is stressed how important the respect for the fortress of Avadon is. It needs a veneer of invulnerability, that you discover to be beset in a variety of ways throughout the game. As a Hand, you represent this "invulnerable" fortress, and initially this meets the kind of subservient responses you would expect. But as you move into new areas, where Avadon's grip is less strong, you meet open or hidden defiance, and learn more about its actual power and how its used.

I personally feel that this is the game's strongest point. A setting that looks like a boring old onion at the beginning carefully peels away its layers before your eyes in a (highly guided) storyline. The writing isn't always amazing and some NPCs tend to be too obvious exposition-dispensers, but the pacing of more and more details being unveiled, and the locations chosen to do so, are brilliantly set up to guide you so that major events in the storyline may still surprise you, but always make sense. They also create a situation where you are forced to choose between two sides, but they aren't clearly good or evil sides, instead providing realistic political choices for the player to take.

City Of Heroes Retrospective Q&A 3
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Paragon Studios has released a new retrospective Q&A featuring comments from City of Heroes developers. The article is part of the company's celebration of the super hero themed MMO's seventh anniversary, and includes developer comments about working at Paragon Studios.

What are some of the things you love the most about Paragon Studios?
Melissa "War Witch" Bianco, Lead Designer

" The people - I don't care how 'perfect' your job may seem, if you can't get along with the people you work with, it's wasted. I have such joy working with these people, they're funny and smart and passionate and creative. "
"I go to work and I get to have posters and pictures and SWAG hanging around all over my cube and no one gets mad!"
"I love that we have events like BBQs, and Bounce Houses, and Bowling, and parties - we get to hang out socially, too, not just professionally."
"We've all come to know and love Stinky, the neighborhood skunk who hangs out on occasion"
"My team, they rock."
"I don't love the Tetris machine anymore, but that's only because I'm really bad at it."
"The correspondence Wall - anytime we get a post card or a letter, it goes up there - those are always really fun to read (I love that people take the time to write them!)"
"My morning walks with Television and sometimes Black Scorpion, or whomever else we can drag out at 7:15 a.m. to go to Starbucks. I'm already on my Green Reward Program, trying to catch up to Black Scorpion who already has his Gold card. Yes, I'm an achievement type girl."

World Of Warcraft Encounter Journal Discussed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

PC Gamer has posted a new article detailing an upcoming feature to Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft. Now in testing on the public test realms the Encounter Journal feature will offer detailed information about bosses players will face in dungeon encounters.

The new Encounter Journal has landed on the World of Warcraft test realms, providing full details of the boss fights in the upcoming Firelands raid. The Journal is set to act as a one stop, in-game wiki that will provide in depth information on every raid boss, gathering the huge amount of information normally only available on sites like WoWhead and WoWwiki into one official document.

The Journal will list detailed descriptions of each bosses’ attacks, and the exact challenges players will encounter in each boss chamber, but will the new addition ruin the surprise of WoW’s raids? And will listing every boss attack make them too easy to defeat?
