Supreme Commander 2: Infinite War Battle Pack Now Available

Virtual Programming recently announced the release of Infinite War Battle Pack downloadable content for the Mac OS X version of Supreme Commander 2. Infinite War features eight new maps, an army of new units, and a variety of research boosts and upgrades for all three factions: the United Earth Federation (UEF), the Illuminate, and the Cybran Nation.

"I just found out the hard way that if a Cybran Monkeylord Experimental Spiderbot gets inside your defenses, you can pretty much kiss that match good-bye," commented Virtual Programming CEO Mark Hinton. "It's just one of many exciting new units found in this downloadable content."

"Don't forget about the new maps and research tree improvements," added Supreme Commander 2 lead designer Chris Taylor, who co-founded the development studio Gas Powered Games. "Just when you think you've mastered everything Supreme Commander 2 has to offer, Infinite War drops a nuke on your well-honed strategies. Time to develop new ones."

Infinite War's eight new maps include everything from the two-player QAI Labs, located high above the surface of Pollux IV, to the eight-player free-for-all Tourneydome (eight commanders enter, one commander leaves). Among the new units are a host of experimentals and such stealthy units as the Illuminate Sniper Bot and the Cybran Air Scout. The research improvements increase production times, give units new capabilities, and more.

Second Ghost Whisperer Dev Blog Released

Legacy Interactive has posted a new story based blog about the development of a Ghost Whisperer hidden object game for Mac and Windows. Based on the television series, the game will follow the exploits of Melinda, Jim, Delia, Eli as they struggle to solve the mysteries surrounding earthbound spirits.

“Intriguing! But I’ve heard of games like this before. A game made in my image must have innovation!! What do you bring that will make this game different from all others?”

“We’ve got a large number of puzzles planned, ranging from classic logic and shape construction puzzles to our unique Ghost Vision puzzles where players will need to puzzle their way through a surreal scene in order to see Melinda’s visions of the past, revealing secrets that help them piece together the mystery behind each haunting. What’s more, our hidden object scenes are each haunted by spirits that the player must find in order to help them cross over. In exchange, the ghosts will reveal another item the player will need to solve the mystery!”

“I am intrigued. What guidance do you need from me?”

“I’ve got two fantastic stories planned out. One that takes place in an art museum with a haunted portrait that seems to be changing slowly but surely into a more sinister version of itself as long as it hangs in the Grandview Art Museum. It’s a good story – lost loves, regrets, and forgiveness. I promise it will do you justice. The other begins when a sick, elderly man is found alone in his enormous mansion after having been abandoned by his caretaker. Doctors quickly notice that though he’s not well enough to feed himself, he doesn’t seem to be dehydrated at all. Who was giving him water and his pills? The story leads into a story of fathers and sons, betrayal and love that never dies.”

Civilization V Reviewed

Macworld has posted a new review of Sid Meier's Civilization V, brought to Mac by Aspyr Media. The fifth edtion of the world building strategy series includes a redesigned game engine, new combat system, improved visuals, and the addition of ranged bombardment. Macworld gave the game a score of 3.5 out of 5 mice.

From the review:

Technology trading, a staple of previous editions of Civilization, has been replaced by joint research agreements between allied nations. By investing gold, both civilizations will get a random unknown technology after a random number of terms. Long time fans of the series have gotten used to the game mechanics being tinkered, even when they don’t want them to be— in this case, I don’t understand why the developers couldn’t have kept tech trading and allowed civilizations to jointly research as well.

Another new feature in Civilization V is the edition of City-States. City-States are small countries based in one city that aren’t in direct competition for world domination. They can be bribed, conquered, and befriended and gain the player bonuses or units. Each city-state has one of three personalities, though if you befriend them they’ll gift you useful units like warriors. Despite seemingly not part of the greater game and easily conquered, they do usually have surprising fight and technology. During one game Copenhagen started conquering French cities. I had to laugh.

Two Worlds II 'Creative Vision' Diary Unveiled

SouthPeak and TopWare Interactive have posted a new video developer diary for Two Worlds II, the upcoming fantasy RPG game from Reality Pump. The video offers details about the history of the franchise and showcases some of the customization options available in the game.

Two Worlds II will send players to the unexplored land of Eastern Antaloor and will feature detailed graphics, an active combat system, and a complex storyline. It is scheduled for release in North America on January 25.
