LEGO Universe Goes Gold
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

The LEGO Group recently announced that the upcoming LEGO Universe MMO has gone gold and is being prepped for mass distribution this fall. The game will allow players to create their own custom LEGO minifigure and venture forth to combat the Maelstrom, join with friends to complete missions, and collect bricks to build imaginative creations.

In the upcoming MMOG, the chaotic Maelstrom threatens to destroy all Imagination in the Universe! Only a courageous team of heroes, the Nexus Force, stands in its way, but they desperately need your help. The Maelstrom’s darkness is spreading across LEGO Universe as enemy Stromlings battle the Nexus Force in the deepest corners of Forbidden Valley and beyond.
Currently in closed beta, LEGO Universe will ship to North American retail stores on October 26, 2010 with an ESRB rating of “E10+”. The Mac version is powered by TransGaming's Cider Portability Engine.

Eschalon: Book I Updated
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Basilisk Games has announced the release of version 1.06 of Eschalon: Book I, the first title in the company's old school fantasy RPG series. The update fixes several glitches and improves the overall stability of the game.

If you haven’t experienced any crashes or glitches, then version 1.06 will offer no noticeable improvements for you.

Here are some important things to know about this new version:

For Mac users: 1.06 is an Intel-processor only build. See our previous update- we are no longer supporting PowerPC-based Macs. If you have a PowerPC Mac, we obviously recommend that you do not upgrade.

For Linux users: 1.06 is compiled with the latest libraries on Ubuntu 10.04. This might make the game incompatible with your system. Consider trying the demo before you request a new download link.

Links for the demo can be found in the downloads section of our website. If you need a new full version, please email us your purchase information (order number works best!) and we can activate a new download link for you.

We are sending these updates out to our distributors (Steam, Direct2Drive, Impulse, etc.) tonight. They will have their versions updated in a few days if you bought your copy through them.
As mentioned above this latest version of Eschalon: Book I is for Intel Mac owners only. Follow the links below for more information.

The Future Of Basilisk Games
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

In a recent post on the company's official forums Basilisk Games' Thomas Riegsecker revealed some plans for the future. First, the promised add-on for the Eschalon: Book II RPG is likely to include a variety of fixes and updates to the game's engine. Second, the conclusion to the trilogy will include developer tools and Basilisk will support community modding efforts. Third, after Eschalon: Book III, the company plans to release a turn-based, party-based, sci-fi game with a brand new engine similar to Wizardry 8 or Dungeon Master.

For starters, let's talk about Book II. It has sold well, but so far it has only sold half-as-many units as Book I has sold. Granted, Book I has been around for nearly 3 years and so it has had more time to sell, but I still think that we need to keep promoting Book II. There are many potential customers out there and we need to try to reach each one.

That brings us to the Book II add-on. We are getting ready to announce it and when we do, we are going to treat it almost as a "relaunch" of Book II. There are quite a few fixes and updates to the engine, and the additional content does reveal a bit more about the nature of the Orakur. I will likely adjust the difficulty of the game as well, to keep the upper levels challenging for veteran players.

So what else is in our future? Well, Book III is a certainty. We have all the tools, we have the customer base, and we have a story that needs to be finished. Book III is likely to be a smaller game than Book II in terms of physical world size, with a greater focus on the main quest and multiple endings. The cool thing is that we will release all our tools with Book III and we will actively work with the "mod community" to support new adventures made by fans.

We are also getting very excited about the new engine and game we have been working on for a couple years now. This new game will be developed along side of Book III. What can we tell you about it? Well...
- It's being made with a brand-new game engine that feels kind of like "Wizardry 8" or a really advanced "Dungeon Master" type of engine.
- It will be a sci-fi game, but it will be a "fringe" sci-fi game which means it will have some fantasy elements. Star Wars kind of fits this description.
- It will be party-based, turn-based, and be the "deepest" role-playing system we've ever made. We're calling this system "Manticore", which is an evolved version of Eschalon's RPG system (which was called "Centaur" for all of you who are curious about such things.)

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 12 comments

Interplay Entertainment recently announced Interplay Discovery, a new publishing program for original games that will launch two new titles in October 2010. One of the new games, Pinball Yeah!, will be available for Mac users. Developed by CodeRunners, the pinball game features several themes.

“Interplay DiscoveryTM will introduce promising developers from all over the world to the global market by releasing great new games at great prices,” said Hervé Caen, CEO of Interplay. “So far our efforts are paying off and we have discovered two new games from two new developers.”

From developer CodeRunners in Portugal, Pinball Yeah lets players rock the silver ball through several themes, including an Irish Pub, Pirates, a unique Virtual Reality table called “AI,” and a classic 1950's party table.

Ricardo Teixeira from Coderunners said, “Our main objective is to give the players fun and immersive fantasy gameplay on our pinball tables, an area that has been left unexplored, while still providing a classic mechanical table for the hardcore fans. It's an honor to work with Interplay and taking part in Interplay Discovery presents an amazing opportunity for indie developers. This is our first game, after which we plan to add more content to Pinball Yeah and create other games with novel experiences for gamers worldwide.”

According to Interplay President Eric Caen, creator of the Interplay Discovery TM Publishing Program, “We are happy to help this young talented team to fine tune their innovative game and reach a worldwide audience.”

Pinball Yeah!
Pirates, Leprechauns, Krakens, Artificial Intelligence, a metal ball and your thumbs. The secret formula that takes you deep into a new and innovative fantasy pinball experience.

Embrace a virtual world controlled by an evil A.I., with no purpose other than to seek your high-score's demise! Four tables are available for your thumbs delight:

  • Outsmart the wicked A.I. to gain access to other simulations.
  • Assist the pirates against the mighty Kraken, while keeping an eye out for treasure!
  • Quench your thirst and grab a handful of peanuts at "Ye Old Irish Pub" to help you focus on your quest for the Leprechaun's life savings!

Interplay Discovery:
The Interplay Discovery TM Publishing Program is open to developers with a complete or nearly completed game ready to be published. Eric Caen further explained the process: “Publishing agreements for promising titles typically can be signed within a few days of product submission. At that point, Interplay's team of design & gameplay experts can help developers through the finalization, optimization, approval and publishing processes. We hope to bring great games to market very regularly, as we are starting to do with these first two games. Who knows, one of these new developers could become as famous as some of the current greats previously published by Interplay.”

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Gala Networks Europe, a publisher of free-to-play online games, has announced that Terra Militaris, its upcoming browser-based real-time strategy MMO, will be launched by the end of 2010. Developed by Snail Game, the title will combine historical MMORTS gameplay with high-end Flash graphics and will be fully playable on both PC and Mac formats.

In the persistant online world of Terra Militaris, players will start the game by choosing one of the four great ancient civilisations; Rome, Egypt, Persia and China and create a hero in order to build their own empire. Players will have to evolve their empire through five different eras by further developing their knowledge in the fields of technology, construction, military and economics. To achieve the ultimate victory, players will need to build powerful armies by levelling up their heroes and combat units, upgrading their weaponry and by learning effective battle tactics.

Players can conquer their rival’s territories by laying siege to their strongholds, taking over and controlling important cities, forging alliances and uniting military forces with other players to lead massive combined armies in epic real-time battles, which can be against NPCs, individual human players and even entire guilds. Players can also increase their political influence by spreading religion, exploring uncharted territories and building trading routes on the vast world map. They must be ready to master all these strategic tools and finally unite all the ancient civilisations under their banner to rule the world.
Terra Militaris will be available by the end of 2010 through the gPotato.eu games portal with no download or subscription fee required. To play the game users will login to the official website using their preferred Mac or PC web-browser.
