StarCraft II Beta Retrospective
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has posted a new retrospective article about the recently ended beta testing phase for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. The eagerly awaited sequel to the company's still popular sci-fi RTS title, StarCraft II is scheduled to launch July 27. The game will take place a few years after the events of Broodwar and will offer both an extensive single player campaign and in-depth multiplayer action.

Of course, not everything was perfectly balanced and many changes were made along the way. Who could forget about the epic mothership or planetary fortress rushes destroying just about everything in their wake? And what good was a force of battle-hardened units when SCVs could get the offensive job done just fine? Oh and yes, honey, we shrunk the Thor. Watching battles play out with that behemoth hogging the map was certainly interesting, so much so that the terrans had to make some budget cuts and buy smaller parts.

One real game changer was the long-awaited introduction of the StarCraft II Editor. Custom map creation was available in late April, and map publishing became available approximately a month later. Committed testers painted the Internet red with footage of their unique maps, match shoutcasting, and live game streams. Some of the more popular videos racked up hundreds of thousands of views. There are still a great many gems out there if you haven't taken the time to check them out.

Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Mac|Life recently posted a new review of The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena from Virtual Programming. The game features the Riddick movie character in two adventures: the Assault on Dark Athena campaign and an enhanced version of the original Escape from Butcher Bay. Mac|Life gave the game a score of 3.5 out of 5.

From the review:

Much is recycled from the absolutely stellar Escape from Butcher Bay; both games have three main parts: shooter, stealth, and bassy one-liners. Dark Athena, however, is built on a new engine that supplies updated lighting effects, combat, and environments. Fighting is also a much larger part of Athena--players frequently choose between devastating enemies with close combat or using the guns found around the ship. One of the true strengths of Athena is the way it gives you an almost guilt-inducing feeling of becoming a highly trained killer--manifested in brutal finishing moves when you melee, stab, or impale at exactly the right time.

Even minor characters have movie-caliber polish, and the voice acting is first rate. Waiting in the shadows, you’ll overhear characters speak about their wives, their jobs, and their guns. Apparently, a ship full of mercenaries fosters rather foul mouths; Assault on Dark Athena contains the most explicit language of any game in recent memory.

City Of Heroes: Going Rogue Previewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

IGN has posted a new preview of NCsoft and Paragon Studios' City of Heroes: Going Rogue, the upcoming expansion for the super hero themed MMO. The second paid expansion for the franchise features a new alignment system which will allow heroes and villains the chance to switch sides, two new primary fictional characters, and the new threat of the parallel universe known as Praetoria.

Players creating a character in City of Heroes: Going Rogue will have access to all 10 hero archetypes, rather than the five that heroes and villains are each limited to. In addition, four new power sets are available – dual pistols, demon summoning, kinetic energy, and electric control.

I messed around with a low-level dual pistols character for a while, and I have to admit, it was pretty neat. Higher level characters have access to much cooler maneuvers, of course, with bullets whizzing and spinning everywhere as well as a multitude of status effects to inflict.
