City of Heroes Super Booster V: Mutant Pack Now Available
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

NCSoft recently announced the release of City of Heroes Super Booster V: Mutant, a new set of mutation themed costumes, emotes, and a new power available for purchase from the NCSoft store. The booster enables the new features for all characters on an account.

David Nakayama, City of Heroes' Art Lead and Floyd Grubb, Senior Powers Designer, also recently shared some information about the new super booster pack in a developer diary from PC Gamer.

Harness the powers of mutation in City of Heroes® Super Booster V: Mutant now available at the NCsoft® store. This new super booster evolves character customization to a higher order with its fantastic Organic Armor and Bioluminescent costume sets.

For the first time ever, costume pieces can also have their own unique glows! Super Booster V: Mutant also comes with three bizarre costume change emotes and the new Secondary Mutation power, which unlocks the incredible potential within your character's DNA!

After much excitement generated by the testing of Super Booster V: Mutant on the North American Training Room, our European and North American code giveaway as well as the posting of the new costume change emotes on our Facebook page, the wait is now over! So wait no more and head over to the NCsoft store now to embrace the mutant within!
From PCGamer:
BIOLUMINESCENT represents the change-from-within concept of post-humanity: with these parts, your hero or villain is clearly changing at a genetic level and doing so in style–with tintable glows that really pop in dark environments. Given the new glow tech, we immediately looked to actual examples from nature for inspiration and got the set’s name along the way. Production art from James Cameron’s The Abyss also came in handy. The patterns themselves were designed to fit several different character types at once, and we tried to avoid anything too tech-y or too tribal.

ORGANIC ARMOR represents the other side of the coin: external change-from-without. With these parts, you can achieve a carapace/exoskeleton look, as if your character is growing a new skin or shell or perhaps being taken over by a symbiotic entity. And for added visual punch, you get the tintable glows here too. In terms of inspiration, both Senior Character Artist Jay Doherty and I were thinking along the same lines for this one: densely overlapping organic shapes like you’d see in the work of Japanese artist Yasushi Nirasawa.

Cataclysm: The Changing Face Of Azeroth
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Gamespiral.com has posted a new preview of Cataclysm, the upcoming next expansion for Blizzard Entertainment's popular MMO, World of Warcraft. The article includes information about changes to the game which will be introduced with the release of the expansion.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is the third expansion pack to the award winning MMORPG, announced by Blizzard in August 2009. Over the next few weeks I will be looking at some of the different features of the new expansion, starting this week with the changing landscape of the World of Warcraft.

The main plot of the expansion is the return of Deathwing the Destroyer from an elemental plan called Deepholm. This return creates a tear in dimensions which is going to cause a lot of changes in the world of Azeroth.

Another big change is that Blizzard are going to introduce flying mounts to all regions. At the moment flying mounts are available at level 60, but only in Outland and Northrend. Some of the upcoming changes will be to allow the use of flying mounts in the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalmidor, though the details are limited at the moment. So here’s a look at some of the big changes and what this may mean to current players of World of Warcraft.

Blizzard Entertainment Global Writing Contest 2010 Unveiled
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has announced a new global writing contest. Participants are asked to submit by August 23 a 2,500 to 7,500 word story set in the company's Warcraft, StarCraft, or Diablo universes. The grand prize winner will win a trip to meet the Blizzard writing staff at Blizzard HQ in California, as well as a Diablo III Overthrown barbarian diorama or a Frostmourne sword.

Blizzard Entertainment is proud to present the 2010 Blizzard Global Writing Contest! Once again you're called to action, to use your wits and strength, to compete for the ultimate prize.

Your weapons? They seem to be but a musty tome and quill*, but know that their power is far stronger than the armies of the Scourge, far craftier than the zerg Swarm, and far mightier than the Burning Hells. Ready your tools, scribe, and prepare for combat with the inky beast called fiction!

Whether you're an accomplished writer or you simply fancy writing as a hobby, we encourage one and all to submit their creative works to our judges of official Blizzard writers and masters of lore. Their eyeballs are glistening and ready, their ocular fortitude intensified by the 2009 Blizzard Global Writing Contest.

Yes, last year's contest was a marathon for the retina. After poring over story and ballad, adventure and romance, the judges ascended from their drool-covered keyboards to proclaim that they had succeeded in their charge: the 2009 winners had been chosen. News delivered, they then heroically passed out.

Do you dare test our judges' optic mettle, laying your ideas and dreams beneath their unblinking gaze? If so, submit a 2,500- to 7,500-word short story written in English and set in the Warcraft, StarCraft, or Diablo universe by August 23, 2010, and earn your chance to visit the Blizzard headquarters and meet the writers and staff behind the lore of Blizzard's games and books.

Award Categories:
Grand Prize: The grand prize winner will receive a trip to Blizzard's headquarters in southern California, where you'll meet and eat with the Blizzard writing staff. You'll also receive your choice of a Diablo III "OVERTHROWN" barbarian diorama or a Frostmourne sword.

Runners-up: Seven runners-up will each receive a prize package of the Diablo Archive, the Warcraft Archive, the StarCraft Archive, and the Warcraft: War of the Ancients Archive, all signed by Chris Metzen, the cover artists, and Blizzard's writing staff.

EVE Online: New Primae Vessel Available For Free June 29
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Starting June 29 players of CCP Games' sci-fi MMO, EVE Online, will have the chance to receive a free ship. The Primae is a vessel specifically designed to aid in the recently added option for players to extract minerals from the surfaces of planets. Until July 13 players can log in and receive one of the new vessels.

Beginning June 29, 2010, you will find the ability to redeem it on your account login screen. You can then assign it to a particular character and a friendly ORE agent will deliver it to your hangar bay. You will be able to redeem the Primae once per active (not trial) account and will no longer be available after downtime on Tuesday, July 13th 2010, so make sure you log in to receive yours.

Furthermore the Primae does not require any special skills to fly, but training at least a minimum of planetary interaction skills and beginning your planetary exploration would help to make the most of its abilities. You may find the planetary interaction tutorial video helpful before you jump in the Primae.

It is clear that Outer Ring Excavations [ORE] has been closely following the effects of the recent CONCORD decision to lift the universal ban on capsuleer involvement in planetary affairs, searching for opportunities to modify our business to complement the "immortal" pilots and their proven financial and industrial acumen. Further insight into the design process of the Primae project has become available, shedding light on ORE's brilliant business move.

The Primae is a repurposed ORE design intended to ease the task of extracting resources from planetbound environments. Initially devised as a deep space salvage vessel for large-scale ore retrieval from destroyed ORE fleets in pirate-occupied areas, its previous incarnation was made all but obsolete by the arrival of capsuleers on the interstellar scene. Realizing that the ship could, with a few minor modifications, be made into an efficient resource harvesting aid, ORE wasted no time in revamping the design.

A low signature radius (a holdover from its earlier manifestation) adds a layer of defense to the Primae‘s already decent plating. In addition, the ship‘s two large bays have been re-engineered to hold equipment for planetside resource extraction and processed materials, making it an especially useful complement to any planetside harvesting endeavor.

The Primae ship hulls are being transported under contract by Interbus, and are scheduled to arrive in hangars across New Eden beginning next week.
