TransGaming Announces Several New Games For Macs

TransGaming has announced the redesign of its Mac digital distribution portal, GameTreeOnline.com, and the current and upcoming release of several new Mac games.

Two new Disney Interactive titles, Toy Story 3 and Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey, are available now as digital downloads. In addition, Her Interactive’s first Nancy Drew franchise title for Mac is coming June 29, 2010. These titles join the upcoming Ciderized MMOs LEGO Universe and Riot Games' League of Legends.

Portal 2 Previewed

Joystiq has published a new preview of Valve Software's Portal 2. The preview includes commentary from Valve's Erik Johnson about the upcoming first person action puzzler. Portal 2 was recently rescheduled for a 2011 release date.

Particularly interesting are the "gels": the flubber-esque "Repulsion Gel" and the boost strip-esque "Propulsion Gel." Johnson says, "In Portal 1, surfaces in the world have two states: You can either place a portal on them or not. In Portal 2, we're adding these different types of gels and those get placed on the surface." Imagine a puzzle where you use a portal to redirect a spigot of Repulsion Gel to coat a surface. Then, use another portal to fall out of a nearby wall, bouncing off the gel, reaching high areas. Or redirect a spigot of Propulsion Gel to coat a surface, run on it and make a loop to really boost your momentum before firing a shot somewhere else and redirecting that momentum over, say, a deadly chasm.

There's also a traction beam, an energy bridge and, one can only imagine, plenty more. Any one of these provides ample puzzle fodder; the combination of several of these creates what could only be described as a puzzle-splosion, as evidenced by a short montage at the end of the demo. But that doesn't mean "more difficult," Johnson insists. "The important thing for us is to make sure we're not building a game that's more difficult or requires some skills, like in an action game." He also says that since the game is "a lot bigger" it offers the designers more opportunity to introduce gameplay mechanics, master them, and then combine them.

That challenge of trying to keep the single-player game from being "more difficult" didn't apply to the co-op component. "Those levels are quite complicated, pretty challenging," Johnson says. While the first Portal was a strictly single-player affair, Valve learned that many players played it as though it were co-op. "A parent would watch their kids play or two people would sit on a couch and play together. "

Jolly Rover Reviewed

Gamezebo has posted a new review of Brawsome's Jolly Rover. The high seas point-and-click experience follows the adventures of Gaius James Rover, a dog who just wants to star in the circus like his dear old dad. Gamezebo gave the game a score of 4.5 out of 5.

From the review:

Gameplay wise, Jolly Rover is a standard point and click adventure. It's 2D and takes place from a third-person perspective, and most of your time will be spent talking to other characters, collecting items, and solving puzzles. For the most part the puzzles in the game are actually surprisingly intuitive, requiring you to do things that actually make sense in order to proceed. You'll also have to learn a number of voodoo spells in order to solve a lot of the puzzles in the game, which involves memorizing a sequence of symbols in order to perform a specific spell. For these scenes you'll probably want to keep a pen and paper handy so you're not stuck trying to remember what symbols you need to use and in what order. The only real complaint with the way the game plays is that getting from one place to another can often be slow. You do have the option of increasing the speed at which James walks, but some sort of quick travel feature would've been much appreciated.

In an attempt to make the game more accessible to casual players, the developers have included a number of helpful features. At any point in the game you can hit the space bar and the game will highlight every object on screen that you can interact with. This saves you the trouble of going pixel hunting, searching for any clue you missed. You'll also have a wise-cracking parrot companion who will provide additional hints if you need it. There are three levels of hints for most puzzles. The first is free, and offers a subtle, cryptic clue, while the other, more detailed hints require a payment of a cracker. You can collect crackers throughout the different areas in the game and they're pretty abundant, so even if you're constantly using hints it'll be tough to actually run out. This system is great because it allows experienced players to skip the hints all together if they want a greater challenge, while more casual players can get help if they need it.

Apple Games Features Team Fortress 2

Apple Games has published a new feature article on Team Fortress 2, the team based first person shooter from Valve Software. Apple's article combines an overview of the game's features with commentary from co-creator and project lead, Robin Walker. The feature also offers information about the game's classes, back story, and strategies for success in each of the six available modes.

To develop the game’s art style, Walker’s team turned to another icon who might seem out of place in an article about a first-person shooter: Norman Rockwell, who, along with such predecessors as Dean Cornwell and J.C. Leyendecker, established a specific tone for early-to-mid 20th century art. “Good art direction doesn’t just look good, it should also solve functional problems for your players,” Walker notes.

He cites an example of that: “A player meeting another player in the game needs to be able to rapidly extract a set of information from the in-game representation of that other player, such as ‘What team is the player on?’ ‘What class is the player?’ ‘What weapon is the player using right now?’ One of the things we’d identified in our testing was the importance of silhouettes for identification purposes: they’re color agnostic and work at extreme ranges, under widely varying lighting conditions. And it helped if the silhouettes were very clean.”
