6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 7 comments

Riot Games recently announced a partnership with TransGaming to expand its debut title, League of Legends, and will be releasing a version for the Mac that will be available for download this summer. The new Mac version of the online multiplayer strategy game, powered by TransGaming’s Cider Portability Engine, is a session based multiplayer online game which challenges rival teams to compete for victory.

“Millions of gamers across the world are accessing their gaming content on Macs but until now they have not been able to play League of Legends,” said Brandon Beck, co-founder and CEO of Riot Games. “The first competitive phase of the game will be kicking off this summer, and we’re excited that Mac gamers will also be able to participate and have a chance to vie for top prizes.”

With TransGaming’s Cider Engine, the Mac version of League of Legends will have all the same game features as its award-winning PC counterpart. Players can download the game for free from www.leagueoflegends.com and, after a short installation, begin playing instantly. Artwork, graphics, in-game items and controls will remain the same in the Mac version, giving both PC and Mac gamers equal opportunity to compete in the game at high levels for free.

"League of Legends is an outstanding game and one that will be thoroughly enjoyed by Mac gamers everywhere who have been waiting for a premium free-to-play release," commented Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming Inc. "League of Legends represents TransGaming’s commitment to bring a breadth of exceptional video gaming entertainment to the Mac community."

League of Legends, Riot Games’ debut title, launched on Oct. 27, 2009 in North America and Europe. It is a session-based, multiplayer online game where rival teams compete for victory. Built by a veteran development team and the original creators of Defense of the Ancients, one of the world’s most popular player-made mods, League of Legends combines elements of the role-playing and strategy genres with addictive competitive action.

League of Legends is rated "T" for Teen.

Apple Games Features EVE Online Tyrannis
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Apple Games has posted a new feature article, this one focusing on the recently released Tyrannis expansion for CCP Games' sci-fi MMO, EVE Online. The expansion introduced the ability for players to mine planets as well as more robust community features with EVE Gate social networking elements. Apple's article offers a story based look at the new mining features and an overview of EVE Gate.

“It’s time,” Paukonsuo says matter-of-factly. “All four factions wholeheartedly support this decision, which could revolutionize the manufacturing and distribution of goods throughout New Eden. There are more than 60,000 planets available, and no two are alike in terms of type and location of raw materials.”

So what does this mean for the average capsuleer? I wonder. “Capsuleers can now scan planets for resources that match their needs,” Paukonsuo explains. “When they find a planet they want, they place a Command Center on its surface, hopefully in a spot that ensures maximum efficiency when they begin installing extractors and processors and placing junction and storage nodes.”

She continues: “If they’re smart with their planning, they should have a highly-efficient network that will earn as much ISK [InterStellar Kredits] as they can squeeze out of the operation. New skills will let them push production even further. Of course, the greatest reward comes out of mining resources on planets in low-security sectors, where fighting will also be the fiercest.” Paukonsuo offers a feline smile.
