Penumbra Overture, Lugraru Source Code Released, More Coming
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Frictional Games and Wolfire Games have announced the release of the source code for Penumbra: Overture (together with the source code for the engine and tools used in its creation), as well as the code for Lugaru HD.

The releases come as a result of the successful Humble Indie Bundle promotion, which resulted in over $1 million donated to the participating developers and charities. Apart from Penumbra and Lugaru, the source codes for the indie games Aquaria and Gish (both available in the Humble Indie Bundle) are also on the way.

Penumbra Overture Souce Code Release:

Penumbra: Overture contains a unique physics interaction system for first person games, a system that has been exclusive to the series and not found in any other game. With the release of the source code, we hope this will change as the interaction system can be used for much more than our genre specific horror games. The source code is currently running on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux – with the public release of the source code, perhaps even more platforms can be supported!

"We have been talking about releasing the engine and game code as open source for quite some time. With the success of the Humble Indie Bundle came the perfect opportunity and we decided to join the other games in releasing our code. Although the code for the game and engine encompass several years of work, it is not actively used today. It was basically just rotting away in the dark corners of our hard drives. It feels much better to have it published in the open, where it has a chance to grow and do some good. I hope that it will be found useful and I am excited to see what people can do with it!" - Thomas Grip, Programmer and Co-Founder Frictional Games.

The source code has been uploaded to GitHub where it is easy for people to download the latest version, suggest patches, make new versions of the code and much more. To kick start the development we have also put up a dedicated section in our forum, where people can discuss the code and where we will try to provide as much help as we can. We have also written a more detailed overview of what the code contains in our blog, so interested parties should go there for more information.
Lugaru HD Source Code Release:
In the spirit of the Humble Indie Bundle, we have decided to release the source code to Lugaru! Our community has already made some great mods by editing the levels and graphics, but source code access will allow for much deeper modifications. The coding style is what you might expect from a self-taught high school student, so it could be a challenge to understand, but feel free to give it a shot!

The Mercurial repository is hosted at icculus.org -- if you'd rather just have a simple download, we have a snapshot of the initial source code release here. We are releasing the source code under the General Public License(GPL), which means you can distribute modified versions of the Lugaru code, but they must also be open-source under the GPL. The game assets are included in the snapshot, and can be redistributed for free, but cannot be resold without our permission.

The source code is based on Ryan C. Gordon's branch, which took David Rosen's original Windows and Carbonized Mac OS code and ported it to Linux and Mac OS X, using SDL and OpenAL. It should compile as-is on those platforms from the command-line. On Mac you can type "sh makemac.sh" to build (or use the Xcode project!), and on Linux you can just type "make". The code is compatible with Windows, but the included Visual Studio project is not completely up-to-date. We should have that sorted out soon, especially with your help!

We have included enough of the game data to run the demo version. Please note that the game data is not under the GPL, and forbids commercial redistribution.

Din's Curse Expansion Early Details
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

In a recent blog post Soldak Entertainment's Steven Peeler discussed ideas for an upcoming potential project, an expansion for the recently released action RPG, Din's Curse. The expansion would likely focus on a specific monster group and could include new monsters and a new character class.

Din's Curse gives interested gamers the chance to produce mods for the game. The game features 141 possible class combinations, an infinite number of dynamically generated towns, and a game world directly impacted by player choices.

Right now I'm thinking of doing a monster theme, specifically, Demons. The rough idea is that the various types of Demons have gotten tired of all of the Undead constantly attacking them. They are banding together, calling forth other Demon kind, and fighting back. Right now my tentative title is Din's Curse: Demon War.

I would like to add at least a few new demon types and various new items, modifiers, objects, and traps that fit the theme. I'm sure I'll add other things that are just nice improvements also.

I would also like to add a new class. Two good suggestions on our forums have been a Monk or Bard. Both would be pretty cool. Another interesting class could be something along the lines of Demon Hunter or Demon Knight since it would fit the theme quite a bit.

EVE Online: Tyrannis Release Moved To May 26
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

CCP Games has announced that Tyrannis, the upcoming expansion for EVE: Online has been delayed until May 26, with some Planetary Command Center features delayed until June 8. The expansion will feature the ability to harvest minerals from planets, updates to its EVE Gate social networking elements, and a variety of other optimizations and improvements.

In our regression testing, we have identified scalability issues with the Planetary Interaction feature, which led to code refactoring that then needed further testing before being launched to Tranquility. Planetary Interaction is a unique feature in the sense that it is available to almost all players in the game providing opportunity for manufacturing for the masses, so ensuring that it runs smoothly on our cluster is of great importance to all.

On release, you will be able to view resources on planets, buy and train skills pertaining to Planetary Interaction, discuss your options with your corporation and allied corporations and scout out the planets. We will be releasing a tutorial video in advance of the expansion deployment to help you learn the system as well, but actual manufacturing and extraction of commodities will only be available when we seed the Planetary Command Centers. We are giving players two weeks to familiarize themselves and make their decisions. During that time, our engineering team will be working behind the scenes to test and ensure stellar performance of said Command Centers. Mark your calendars: the great land rush begins when Tranquility opens after our normal downtime on June 8, 2010.

EVE Gate will also be released on May 26th, with its web access to EVE Mail, Calendar and revamped contacts, both in-game and on the web.
