Valve Looking For Mac Beta Testers
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 24 comments

Valve Software is looking for Mac beta testers for its upcoming Mac version of Steam. The online store, once released, will also feature Mac versions of Valve's game offerings including Half Life 2, Portal, and Left 4 Dead.

From Macworld:

The survey asks a number of prying questions about your gaming habits, including how many Intel-based Macs you own and of what model, how many people use your Mac, and how many Mac games you’ve bought over the last year. As if that weren’t enough, Valve is also interested in your consumption of PC and console games, as well as your use of Mac software for running Windows, like Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, Crossover Games, and Apple’s own Boot Camp.

Finally, you’ll also have to upload a condensed version of your Mac’s System Profiler info, following specific instructions provided by Valve. Presumably, this helps Valve not only determine if your machine is a viable candidate, but also gives them the opportunity to find a wide variety of Macs and configurations for testing their software.

You’ll need a free Steam account before you throw your hat in the ring. There’s no timeframe for when Valve will contact beta testers, but since Steam is expected to arrive in April, one would presume the day is not far off.

Avernum 6 Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

IndieRPGs.com has published a new review of Spiderweb Software's Avernum 6. The game is set in the world of Avernum, an enormous series of caves far below the surface of the world. It wraps up loose plot threads from previous games and reveals the final fate of the underground realm and its popular characters. IndieRPGs gave the game a score of 4 out of 5.

From the review:

The writing in Avernum 6 is truly the game’s backbone, and it ranges from competent to quite good.

Though Jeff Vogel’s characterizations occasionally lack consistency, he has a way with words, and his curmudgeonly narrative voice provided me with chuckles on more than a few occasions. You’ll spend a lot of time exploring, talking to people, and searching things. The dialog and descriptions you get of the game world will arguably provide most of your moment-to-moment entertainment value while playing, so it’s good that Vogel has taken the time to do this well.

Avernum 6, however, lacks a certain level of polish. The portraits for your party members are distractingly amateurish, particularly when compared to the beautiful hand-painted portraits of the other characters you meet during the game. Further, while many of the in-game graphics look pretty good in a still screenshot, few of them animate in-game. The few that do, such as campfires and basic attack animations, don’t look so hot. All in all, the lack of animation doesn’t hurt the experience too terribly, but it is a little strange to see your party members jump from space to adjacent space in short jerks, all the while remaining perfectly rigid.

WoW Story Forum Opens
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has announced the opening of a new forum section for its popular MMO, World of Warcraft. The new Warcraft Story Forum is designed to give fans of the game's lore the chance to comment on the official stories associated with the game, giving the Creative Development team feedback for use in crafting future products and updates.

We are pleased to introduce the Warcraft Story Forum where players can discuss the storylines of the Warcraft universe, as told in-game and through the novels, manga, comics, and short stories that Blizzard publishes. Be sure to visit the new forum here.

In order to get the most benefit out of the story forum, we suggest the following:
  • Feel free to theorycraft, discuss character flaws, strengths, and where you think the story is going or where you would like it to go.
  • Discuss the various published stories, share insights on them, and what aspects you liked or didn’t like most about them.
  • Discuss your favorite quest line stories and least favorite quest line stories.
  • Please refrain from posting non-constructive feedback, attacking other posters, or posting harassing or defamatory language about authors or Blizzard employees.
  • Participate in polls. We’ll be using them here from time to time to get your feedback on various storylines, novel releases and more.
  • Talk amongst yourselves. While we’ll be monitoring discussion and periodically answering questions about the story, this forum is meant primarily as a place for you to discuss various viewpoints with fellow story enthusiasts.
What does the Publishing division hope to accomplish with this Warcraft Story forum?
We'd like to give the community a chance to influence the development of our upcoming stories, so we're trying something new; this forum will serve as a direct line to our story developers. Please note that we're not looking for fully-formed stories - save those for the Global Writing Contest (which we operate and judge) - but rather we're looking for specific examples of what people like, don't like, and what they would like to see (story-wise) from us in the future.
