Ten New Diablo III Screenshots Unveiled

Blizzard Entertainment recently posted ten new screenshots from Diablo III, the game company's eagerly anticipated return to the action RPG franchise. The game will allow players to revisit the world of Sanctuary where they must once again take up arms against the demonic forces threatening humanity.

Diablo III will pick up the story twenty years after the events of Diablo II. Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal have been defeated, but the Worldstone, which once shielded the inhabitants of the world of Sanctuary from the forces of both the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, has been destroyed, and evil once again stirs in Tristram. Playing as a hero from one of five distinct character classes, players will acquire powerful items, spells, and abilities as they explore new and familiar areas of Sanctuary and battle hordes of demons to safeguard the world from the horrors that have arisen.

Diablo III will feature a custom 3D-graphics engine to render lush indoor and outdoor areas of Sanctuary with a high level of detail and vivid special effects. The game’s physics-enhanced environments will be interactive and destructible, offering traps and obstacles that create added danger for players and monsters alike. These elements, along with a new quest system and random scripted events, will be integrated into the game’s random-level generator, giving Diablo III the ultimate combination of dynamic gameplay and replayability. Cooperative and competitive play will be available online through an upgraded version of Blizzard Entertainment’s renowned online gaming service, Battle.net.

Exploring The MMO World Of Onverse

Macworld has posted a new article examining Onverse, a title which fuses social networking with an online virtual world. Onverse allows users to combine 2D features of sites like Facebook and MySpace with the 3D virtual experience of MMOs. The game is free to join, with microtransactions for premium items available from the Onverse store.

Released on November 25th, the latest update added a third “world” that augments the real estate available to new users. The Hub is Onverse’s main drag, with a few high-rise apartment buildings, a casino, a nightclub, an amphitheater, and plenty of stores to shop in. Meanwhile, Volcano Island and Ancient Moon are home to themed housing communities as well as a few outdoor sites to spend time in.

All of these worlds are scattered with points that players can collect to use as currency to buy things like furniture, clothing, and tools. For those willing to spend some actual money, Cash Coins can be purchased through the Onverse website to spend on mansions or “premium” clothing and pets.

What makes Onverse unique from other online virtual worlds is the ability to play mini games against fellow users, in addition to the general chatting and avatar development of its competitors.

Though more are in development, the first game available is IceFall, a giant last-man-standing snowball fight. You enter the IceFall area of the The Hub and introduce yourself to a giant snowman that arranges live games with other players. You jump around on rapidly crashing ice flows, trying to knock other players off with snowballs. Not only is IceFall challenging and a good place to practice your mastery of the controls, it’s also a great opportunity to make friends.

iGame Radio Episode 91 Features Bioshock Review

Episode 91 of Omaha Sternberg's iGame Radio podcast is now available for listening. The podcast features a review of Feral Interactive's Bioshock for Mac as well as reviews of Crush the Castle and Groovin' Blocks for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Todd Hollenshead Discusses id's Merger With Zenimax

Edge Online recently published a brief interview with id Software's Todd Hollenshead. The game developer discussed the company's merger with Bethesda Softworks parent company Zenimax Media.

“Of course, everyone looks at it as, “Well, id was purchased by Zenimax!” but I think it’s just as true that we acquired an internal publishing capacity,” said Todd Hollenshead. “That’s really what the relationship is. As much as we have valued our publishing relationships with other thirdparty publishers in the past, there is a difference, because we were separate companies. Although we were trying to work together, ultimately there is an idea that we have divergent goals.”

“It’s actually worked out really well. They value development for its own sake, rather than just trying to put something in a box and relying on marketing for sales,” said Hollenshead. “They believe in the quality of the product you put in and the value of the entertainment the consumer gets out as what ultimately drives the business. Even more so now than in the past, having a high-quality publishing partner is critical, because the business is so much about either having a hit or being totally irrelevant. There really isn’t a lot of room in the middle.”
