6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Beautiful Game Studios and Virtual Programming recently announced the release of Championship Manager 2010 for Mac. The latest incarnation of the soccer management sim includes a 3D match engine, set-piece creator, scouting networks, and practice matches.

Championship Manager 2010:

Since 1992, the Championship Manager series has give football fans a comprehensive experience, from signing and releasing players to dictating strategy during matches. Players guide their clubs through success and failure over the course of multiple seasons, building a virtual world that provides an alternate history for real-world football.

Championship Manager 2010 deepens that immersive feeling with its centerpiece: a bespoke 3D match engine featuring more than 500 individual player animations created specifically for the game. It brings club managers’ decisions to life, allowing them to easily see the outcomes of their decisions as if they’re watching them happen during a real match.

The 3D match engine also factors into two other key new features: drill set up and execution, including practice matches; and the set piece creator, in which players decide how to best use their athletes’ strengths to produce a perfectly-executed free kick, corner kick defense, or other specific situation. In addition, the scouting system has been revamped, allowing players to receive reports from around the world, and in-game information and news are now more accessible.

“We’re thrilled to offer Mac owners the best football sim available on PC,” said Mark Hinton, CEO of Virtual Programming. “The new features found in Championship Manager 2010 bring with them a level of immersion not previously seen in the series, and we think the Mac community will agree.”

“We’re extremely pleased to be able to announce that Championship Manager 2010 will be coming to the Mac,” stated Roy Meredith, General Manager of Championship Manager. “Following our successful launch of the PC game and strong PR campaign, we’ve seen a lot of requests for a Mac version and they don’t have long to wait now.”
3D Match Engine
The match engine has undergone a radical overhaul with the result, a bespoke fully-animated match engine with over 500 individual player animations. Seven different camera angles, replays and the ability to record and re-watch matches means you will never miss any of the action unfolding on the pitch.
Created entirely from scratch at CM headquarters and designed specifically to bring the management experience to life, the Manager can now see how their decisions and instructions manifest themselves on the playing field in stunning three dimensional form.

Set Piece Creator
This brand new feature enables managers to create completely bespoke Set Pieces. You can call upon all the individual strengths of your squad members to produce the perfectly executed free kick. The creator splits the set piece into a number of stages so managers can fine tune every crucial step from passing direction, cross/chips and runs to coordinating your defence when a corner is taken against you.

Scouting Network
Scouting for new players is now a much more accessible feature and attractive prospect in Championship Manager 2010. Managers are given a world map view of their knowledge of different countries and expenditure allocation. Scouts report back the up and coming star players from around the world allowing you to dedicate more of your time to other areas.

Drill Training
Managers can now set up drills to see how their players match up against each other – shooting, crossing, practice matches and much more all shown in the spectacular three dimensional match engine.

CM Season Live
This is the most exciting and innovative new feature to be unveiled in Championship Manager 2010 which we are especially proud of. A first in the football management genre, CM Season Live is a monthly downloadable update which brings you all the latest events from the world of football, dropping you into the action at key defining moments in the season. It’s nearing the end of the football season and your team is hovering around the bottom of the table, struggling to avoid relegation. Can you take over management, turn your team’s fortune around and prevent the drop?

Mail and Media
A huge range of messaging in the game enables you to have far greater access to information and news from within the game's world of football. Broadcasting real media references, the latest CM news system delivers in a wide variety of ways. The user gets all the information and news that's relevant to their game in order to maximise their potential as a manager.

Dynamic Display Window
A dynamically updated display window brings a real world likeness to the user. Managers will be able to look out on the latest league tables, fixtures, top goal scorers and more from their in-game football world. Coverage from every part of the globe will appear throughout the game on every screen. It's the complete picture.

An exclusive feature to the CM series, ProZone continues to evolve to enable users to access highly detailed, post-match analysis on their players. With full stats on their own team and the opposition, the manager has the complete picture of personal and team performances to aid their decisions. Providing data on every pass, run, shot and more, ProZone is the analysis tool, putting CM in the real football world. Professional managers use ProZone on a daily basis. It doesn't get any more real than this.

The Impact Of Earthquakes In Din's Curse
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Soldak Entertainment has unveiled a new article about features in the upcoming action RPG, Din's Curse. This time Soldak's Steven Peeler discussed some of the specfics of earthquake events in the game, which may impact players in a variety of unexpected ways.

Everything in the area getting damaged a little bit will probably be minor to the player, except when they are foolishly running around with low health. It will usually flatten fragile things like barrels and crates. Really unstable things are going to cause problems, like exploding barrels and energy vortexes will go boom. Of course this can set off a chain reaction of other unstable things.

The damage will also wake up any monsters in the area. Any monster hiding and waiting to ambush the player will likely come out and be a little bit upset. I guess this could be a good or bad thing for the player. It will screw up their ambush, but you might have more monsters to deal with than you would have otherwise. This will also effect any monsters scared of pain who have low morale.

Bit Blot recently announced the release of an Original Soundtrack for Aquaria, the 2D side-scrolling underwater adventure game brought to Mac in cooperation with Ambrosia Software. Some of the features includes on the 2 disc soundtrack include a brand new song, three new remixes of game tunes, an eight page booklet featuring art and lyrics, and an eight panel poster.

This soundtrack is a no-holds-barred special two disc release, filled to the brim with fifty tracks. It includes all the music from the game, but also adds a brand new song, “Fear the Dark”. The talented Jenna Sharpe returned to the studio as “Naija” for the first time since finishing her work on the game about two years ago - to record brand new vocals for this track. The result is an epic nine minute piece that explores the light and dark sides of Aquaria.

In addition to the new song, the track also features three new remixes by other indie game music artists. Brandon McCartin of “Balding’s Quest” brings his imagination and funky beats to the table with his style-bending adaptations of “Dark Places” (the abyss theme) and “Heart of the Forest”. Danny Baranowsky (of Canabalt fame), who also mastered the project, contributes an upbeat, old-school flavoured remix of “Boss Fraught”. (the mini boss theme)

As an added bonus, a work-in-progress five minute “Marian” track has also been included.

The set comes together with sexy packaging designed by myself, Derek Yu and Katie De Sousa. It features 2 discs with full color labels, an eight page booklet featuring new art and lyrics, and an eight panel poster featuring visuals from the game, notes on composing the tracks, score snippets and more. There will be a few purchase options, including having your poster signed!
Aquaria's Original Soundtrack is available for $20. A copy signed by the composer and including extra print materials is available for $30.
