Myth II Soulblighter Patch 1.7 Now Available

Project Magma has announced the release of patch 1.7 for the game Myth II: Soulblighter. The update includes a variety of optimizations, bug fixes, and new features. New additions include support for hi-res quicktime cutscenes, a dialog that locates missing plugins, a resizable overhead map, transferable unit trading if a team captain drops, and a new detail texturing system.

Myth II Version 1.7 is the latest result of the community-based effort to continue the tradition of improving the game. Myth II runs better than ever with accelerated hardware rendering on both Windows XP and Mac OS X platforms, while keeping support for the hardware it was originally designed for. Overall game responsiveness has been improved, and many old causes of crashing and out-of-sync gameplay have been eliminated. Dozens of annoying bugs and oddities have been fixed, making this update the most stable ever - rendering the Myth experience that much more enjoyable.

StarCraft II: Q&A Round 52, Map Maker Series

The 52nd Q&A focusing on answers to fan questions about StarCraft II, Blizzard Entertainment's long awaited sequel to the original StarCraft, is now available. This edition of the Q&A focuses on the map making tools planned for inclusion with the game. SC II will introduce new multiplayer action and a continuation of the storyline.

1. Does it still use the JASS language, or perhaps an upgraded version of JASS?
StarCraft II uses an entirely new scripting language, which we’ve called Galaxy. This language is very similar to C, and anyone familiar with programming in C will have no trouble picking it up.

5. Will the ability to communicate among triggers, for instance via actions or conditions, be improved in the new language?
One significant new feature of the Trigger Editor is support for custom function definitions, including actions and conditions. This means you can create your own actions that are built up from other actions (or custom script code), then use those in triggers just as you would any other action.

EVE Online Tournament Page Unveiled

CCP Games has added a new Alliance Tournament section to its website for the sci-fi MMO, EVE Online. A new developer blog post also reveals changes to this year's tournament structure including modifications to sign up and other rules. Alliance Tournament VII is scheduled to begin in September.

The EVE Online Alliance Tournament is the ultimate battlefield in which the top pilots in EVE Online fight the glory and honour of their alliance. 64 Alliances compete over 3 weekends of intense, explosive action, with the final weekend broadcast live via EVE TV.

Tournament matches are built around engagements that start with up to 20 pilots on the battlefield. Teams fight to the death, using their own in-game resources to provide the best ships, pilots and tactics they can muster. Teams may regroup and change ships, pilots and tactics in between each fight, making for unpredictable and exciting matches!

The Alliance Tournament exists to bring the community of EVE together, and to show off the best that EVE's players and PVP combat have to offer.

The next tournament - Alliance Tournament 7 is scheduled to take place in early September 2009.

Wandering Willows Analyzed

Gamasutra has posted a new review of Wandering Willows, a casual RPG from PlayFirst. In the game players take the role of a balloonist stranded on an island filled with colorful characters and creatures. Repairing the balloon and returning home requires making friends with the inhabitants of the island.

From the review:

These pets are the chief mechanism of the game. The protagonist does relatively little work. Most of the hard labor of climbing trees for fruit or digging up the ground is done by pets. The protagonist may be accompanied only by one pet at a time, but can build up a stable of different pet species and rotate among them. Pets need to be fed, and they level up with enough experience. Different species are good at different things.

(I found myself fleetingly wondering about the slave-labor hierarchy of this society, since the long-term inhabitants mostly rely on the newcomer to provide them with food and clothing, while the newcomer in turn manipulates the cunning but speechless animals into doing all the really hard work. But I am fairly certain the designers did not intend me to think about any such thing.)

What about story? There is a loose framing arc about assembling enough goods to repair your balloon and get off the island, but it isn't the kind of story one is invited to take seriously. The thing is a pastiche of every sort of childhood fantasy element: aliens, pirates, sea monsters, rocket ships, time machines, ancient ruined temples.

As for the gameplay, if you approach it with a goal-oriented, game-winning agenda in mind, you'll find it is largely busywork. You collect quests, you pick fruits and dig up commodities, you fulfill your quests. If you want to, you can go off-script and bake or sew something you weren't explicitly asked to bake or sew, but there is no need to do so: you can earn friendship points by giving gifts to the other characters, but you're likely to end up with their friendship anyway, simply by going through the assigned tasks.
