Vendetta Online: Multiplayer Ships On The Horizon
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
Guild Software has posted an update on the development blog for its massively-multiplayer online space strategy game, Vendetta Online. Current and future changes discussed in the entry include attempts to make the game more welcoming to new players, performance improvements, and an upcoming feature to make multiplayer starships a reality.
As a result, Ray is now working on making multi-player ships a reality in the near future. I can't say how near of a future, because we don't know yet; but if all goes well.. as early as this Friday, if not, then next week. This is a critical stepping-stone as we move towards the goal of Player Capships. In the near-term, you can expect some sort of small "heavy" that has the potential for turrets, such as a Behemoth. This functionality has been planned for a really, really long time, but there may still be some issues with the mechanics as we put this into place, so please have patience with any issues that crop up. Despite the possibility always being there, we've never actually done this before.. which is why dockable capships are always NPCs, and dev-flown capships have never been dockable. Of course, for the first version we'll just be focusing on smaller ships, as I said, where the owner of a given multi-player-capable ship may "invite" other players to join his vessel, while docked in a station. Dynamically joining and leaving these sorts of ships, outside of stations, will not be possible.. you'll have to wait for capships with docking bays for that to happen. Anyway, I think this'll be really cool, and open up a lot of potential for gameplay possibilities. As I said, the mechanics are still in flux, so things like grouping will have to be done independently of which players join which ships. If people want to take grouped missions as multi-player vessels, then they'll need to group themselves as a separate stage.Read more at the page linked below about the changes planned for the game.

Diablo III: Dismemberment, Party Bonuses, Mana Regeneration
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
In his most recent post on the official Diablo III forums, community manager Bashiok discussed death animations, dismemberment, party bonuses, and wizard mana regeneration. Diablo III is Blizzard Entertainment's long awaited return to the popular action RPG franchise.
On death animations and dismemberment:Head over to the GameBanshee site below to read more.
We do have both havok based and hand-crafted animations, and which of these is used is generally dependent on which monster it is. We have a few in there, like the skeletal summoner and grotesque, that have hand-made death animations and those will play through every time. But most monster death is determined by how they died. Was it a critical, was it a critical from a type of elemental damage, was a specific ability used that maybe kills them in a specific way, etc. etc.
Does decapitation count?
On party bonuses:
I'm not sure that's the right way to go about it, but the cooperative game definitely centers on keeping players together. Encouraging them to stay near each other, and helping them get back together should they be separated. There are many ways to do both, not all of them are the right answer.
On mana regeneration:
Obviously it's just too early to say the wizard does or does not have mana issues, that all comes down to balancing and fine tuning, and ideally of course the goal is that each class is very playable and not frustrating. Especially at early levels.
Mana orbs are actually the product of a passive skill in the wizard's arcane tree. Since we can't guarantee people will get that skill I don't think it can ever really become the deciding factor in mana regen. It is an early skill in that tree though, easy to pick up, and sure to be helpful.
