Multiwinia Tutorial Videos Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Ambrosia Software has posted a list of tutorial videos for Multiwinia, the latest real time strategy title from Introversion software. The game allows players to choose from six game modes on over 40 maps as they engage in multiplayer battles for stick figure supremacy.

Multiwinia is a multi-player real time strategy war game unlike any other. A chaotic war is raging in a fantastic fractalized world populated by bloodthirsty little stick men with a mission: follow your orders to annihilate their enemies. They will do your bidding no matter what the cost: order them to take that hill, flank the enemy or run screaming towards the flame turrets. The Multiwinians are bent on destruction, and if a few hundred of them have to be incinerated to get that flag, so be it! Multiwinia is being developed in partnership with Introversion Software, and follows award-winning Darwinia, DEFCON and Uplink.

Freeverse, MrJoy Donate Hordes Of Orcs To Soldiers
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

Freeverse and MrJoy have announced that they are donating the tower defense game, Hordes of Orcs, to the non-profit Games For Soldiers organization. In turn, Games for Soldiers will deliver the digital copies of the game to over 20,000 American armed services personnel stationed throughout Afghanistan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan and Kuwait.

Jon Frisby, CEO of MrJoy said "We're thrilled to share our fantastic Hordes of Orcs game with our soldiers that are overseas. We recognize the hard work and sacrifice they are doing, and by making our game available to them, we hope to help them relax and enjoy themselves."

"The option of playing video games allows the troops to unwind in a pretty healthy way. There's a lot of stress when you are deployed, more than most people can really comprehend," said Jesse Williams, founder of Games For Soldiers. "Having some down time to sit and chill out and play some games is great."

SPC Jesse Williams first began contacting video game publishers while stationed in Afghanistan, securing donations to help outfit his unit's MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) center. After returning home, he founded the Games For Soldiers organization (www.gamesforsoldiers.org), which has shipped thousands of video games to armed services personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2008, to both individual soldiers and base recreation centers and Internet cafes. While there are dozens of organizations chartered with distributing books, toiletries, snacks and other items to U.S. Armed Services personnel, Games For Soldiers is the only entity that is specifically focused on donating video games to the troops.

Available for both PC and Mac, Hordes of Orcs is a unique “Tower Defense” game in which you must build walls and lethal towers to defend your village from the Orcs emerging from “The Glowing Portal of Really Bad Things That We Should Have Bricked-Up a Long Time Ago.” Sadly, the Portal is un-bricked and the Orcs are very, very hungry. Players must strategically use all their resources, including spells and various types of towers, to prevent the Orcs from making it through to the village. If 20 Orcs make it to your village, you’re toast.

Hordes of Orcs retails for $24.95. For more information follow the links below.

GameTap Update Drops Mac Support
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

A recent GameTap blog has revealed upcoming changes to the online gaming service. In the coming weeks GameTap will offer a re-designed website, improved digital store, and a new plug-in to replace the old GameTap player. Several features will be missing at launch, including support for Mac OS X. The post does not specify when, or if, Mac users will again be supported.

We’ll cover these new features in-depth over the next couple of weeks, but here’s a quick preview of what you have to look forward to:
-A unified browsing, downloading, and playing experience
-Desktop & Start Menu shortcuts option for every game
-Exciting titles from new publishers
-All arcade and console games play right in your browser
-Firefox support for in-browser play
-Manage your download queue and favorites in your browser
-Faster loading times
-Additional subscription options
-Simplified multi-computer use
-Better search and navigation tools
-New forum software
-Customizable avatars
-Improved parental controls
-Updated digital download store with a better selection and competitive prices

The trade-off for all this awesomeness is that some GameTap Player features will not be available at launch, specifically: leaderboards, Mac OS X support, challenge play, customizable controls, instant messaging, save states and some personal playlists. Don’t fret too much though, your existing save states, custom controls and leaderboard scores will be saved, and any new high scores will be recorded in the background until the leaderboard system is back up and running. Later in the week we’ll have some tips outlining ways for you to work around these changes.

Out Of The Park Baseball 10 Announced
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Out of the Park Developments has announced Out of the Park Baseball 10. Scheduled to release this spring, the latest incarnation of the sports simulation series features 2009 major league rosters, a redesigned pitching system, and improved AI.

Some of the new features in OOTP 10:

2009 Major League Rosters
The game will ship with the best major league roster set we have ever produced, with thousands of real players, down to the rookie leagues, rated individually and extremely accurately. We have a great team of dedicated people working at the rosters right now, and we will be proud of their work once it is done.

Redesigned Pitching System
We have recoded the entire pitching rating system including adding individual pitch ratings, reworking the endurance/role system and the impact of velocity and groundball percentage in the game engine. This results in the best and most realistic game and player development engine on the planet! Will your veteran ace keep his blazing fastball for another year? Will the youngster develop that promising changeup and become a dominating starter? The new system will change the way you play OOTP!

Customizable In-Game Screen
A new in-game screen will feature 'widgets' which can be activated and freely moved around on the screen. That way, users can adjust the info they see to their preferences and screen resolution.

Improved In-Game AI
The AI responsible for handling strategy in a simulated game has been enhanced, it now acts more realistic and is more challenging.

Enhanced Play-By-Play
We are very proud of our play by play, and this year it is even better than before, adding new plays and more variety.

Inaugural Draft With Budgets
Now the user can set team budgets before an inaugural draft takes place, either all balanced, individually, or based on city population. Player have contract demands which combined must not exceed your draft budget, and the manager has to keep an eye on the budget when making his picks. The old mode without budgets is still available as well, of course. Can you draft the perfect team?

OOTP 10 is available to preorder for $29.99, $10 off the final release price. Read more about the game at the link below.
