IMG Features Instantaction.com
6:23 AM | Marcus Albers | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has posted a feature on Garage Games' online gaming service, Instantaction.com. Made available to Intel Mac users in October, the service offers high-quality, browser-based gaming with an online community. Here's an excerpt from the feature:

Instantaction is in a sense a gaming network, much like Xbox Live or the Playstation Network. This is not to say it is as advanced or feature-filled, but it works on the same concept. Once you have created a username and signed in you can add friends, join games, and send messages, much like the above mentioned. Your screen name stays the same no matter what game you choose, so it comes across as highly integrated.

All the games are supplied by Garage Games, an indie developer that specializes in game engine creation and casual action titles. Unfortunately none of the games are new (though one or two are modified a bit), so you are highly likely to have played them before. If names like Think Tanks or Marble Blast ring a bell, you'll get the picture.

Wolfire Releases Overgrowth Alpha
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Wolfire Games has released an official alpha for its new game Overgrowth. The sequel to Lugaru will inherit the original game's fighting system and will also offer features made available by Wolfire's new Phoenix Engine. The Overgrowth alpha includes the beginnings of Overgrowth's map editor and showcases the game's terrain with effects like multi-sampled HDR framebuffer objects, dynamic blurred cube maps for ambient lighting, object and tangent space normal maps, and atmospheric haze.

Hey guys, we are going to be trying something new: weekly alphas! No exceptions.

Every week, we are going to release a new build to SPF. Whether it’s ready or not. We feel that this open development is a great way to smooth out compatibility issues early on, get feedback to make the game as good as possible, and let fans build mods and other content before the game is even publicly available!

Sure, some of the builds are going to be rough, but that’s expected in an alpha. We are going to release “blessed” builds every once in a while that are particularly polished and noteworthy, so that the hardcore fans can play the cutting edge, while everyone else can wait for blessed releases.
The alpha release is available for those who have preordered the game. Head over to the links below for more information.

Kivi's Underworld: Monsters, Character Profiles, SDK
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Soldak Entertainment has updated its website with several new offerings for Kivi's Underworld, the recently released casual action RPG title. Soldak is now offering a software developer kit for those interesting in creating mods for the game, two new creatures for the game's bestiary page, and two more entries for the character page.

From the bestiary:

Fury
Most creatures die before coming close to molten lava, but not the Fury. They were born from it. These four-armed, red giants have pushed deeper into the underworld, perhaps from war or overpopulation. It is unknown. They are a danger to dark elf and lumen alike.

Fire Thrower
Not even the dark elves know the origins of the Fire Throwers. These rat-faced men were not one of the dark elves experiments gone awry. Some is known of these creatures, though. They love fire, especially the exploding thrown variety.
