6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 6 comments

Spiderweb Software has released Geneforge 5: Overthrow for OS X. The fifth game in the fantasy RPG series brings the saga its conclusion, allowing players to determine whether the Shapers or the rebellion will achieve victory. The game features over 80 areas to explore, five different factions from which to choose, and dozens of possible endings depending on choices made during the game.

More about Geneforge 5: Overthrow:

Spiderweb Software brings you Geneforge 5: Overthrow, the final chapter in their fantasy epic. Return to the world of the Shapers one final time. Explore a vast, war-torn world, create and mold your own army of strange, powerful monsters, and choose a side to help lead to final victory.

Features:
• Enormous world, with over 80 areas to explore.
• Choose among five different factions, each with its own beliefs, cities, and quests. Help the rebels or fight them. Your choices will shape the world.
• Dozens of different endings. Choose for yourself how the saga will finally end.
• Many paths to victory. Slay your enemies or use stealth and diplomacy to outwit them. Become engrossed in the storyline or just go out and wreak havoc.
• Lots of replay value.
• Prior experience with the Geneforge series is completely unnecessary.

The Story:
The Shapers have the ability to create life in any form they choose. They can make living tools that obey their commands, plants that can flourish in the harshest wasteland, and powerful monsters that can crush all who oppose them. The Shapers ruled the known lands, and any who tried to rebel or learn their magical secrets were destroyed.

But then their creations rebelled. Working with humans jealous of their masters, they stole the secrets of the Shapers and created their own armies. They created and unleashed new, even more powerful creations and matched the Shapers in savagery. And now, years into the rebellion, the war has settled into a gruesome stalemate. The lands are scorched, and city after city falls.

The two sides are so delicately balanced that one brave warrior can turn the tide. Will you help the rebels overthrow the Shapers? Will you help the Shapers regain their power, tempted by the incredible rewards they offer? You might be able to end this war. Which side will you choose?

Lugaru Video Contest: Win A Free Copy Of Overgrowth
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Wolfire Software has announced its first official Lugaru contest with a video competition. Interested participants are encouraged to create an exciting Lugaru gamplay video. The winner of the contest will receive a free copy of Overgrowth (the upcoming sequel to Lugaru), and $50 worth of Wolfire t-shirts.

Contest Rules:

1. Submit your best Lugaru videos to WeGame. You can use the nifty WeGame widget mentioned in Jeff’s previous WeGame post (if you use Windows). Or you can use your favorite games recording software and then upload your vid to WeGame. Snapz Pro for Mac OS X or Fraps for Windows are great, but unfortunately not free.  Check the forum for more suggestions.

2. In two weeks time (Wednesday, the 3rd at 11:59 PM PST) we will close the contest and have a voting period for three days.  The player who has submitted the Lugaru video that has received the most WeGame “likes” wins!  We will have some runner up prizes as well.

3. Feel free to use debug mode (I recently saw a ridiculous wolf-on-fire video), your own custom levels, mods, or skins (I remember seeing Turner line dancing in a tux somewhere). A Lugaru trailer video would be particularly awesome, but again, anything goes!  Even a simple fight!

The winner will receive a free copy of Overgrowth, a $50 gift certificate to the soon-to-be-announced Cafépress Wolfire T-Shirt Store, and mad respect from his fellow gamers. We will also be giving out copies of Overgrowth to select runner ups (or tshirts if they have already purchased Overgrowth) based on subjective feedback!

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that World of Warcraft’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. This eclipses the previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in January 2007 by Blizzard’s first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade.

“We’re grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we’ve created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead.”

“World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King surpassed all sales expectations, with 100 Gamestation stores opening at midnight to cater for a high level of demand,” said Andrew Thompson, product director, Gamestation UK. “Players queued for hours - some dressed as characters from the game - proving that enthusiasm for Blizzard Entertainment’s latest installment is at its highest level to date."
