Diablo III: Item Gambling, Character Death, New Screenshots

GameInfoWire has posted a handful of new screenshots from Diablo III, while inDiablo.de has posted a new video interview with lead designer Jay Wilson. The game is Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming return to the demonically troubled world of Sanctuary. The action RPG sequel will continue the saga 20 years after the events in Lord of Destruction and will feature an all new 3D graphics engine, new game physics, and a host of new beasties to slay.

From the inDiablo.de interview:

in Diablo.de: Will Diablo 3 still have a gambling-feature to gamble good rare Items?
Jay Wilson: We have not actually made a decision on gambling. We have talked about it and we might do it! It kind of depends on some of the other decisions we will make. We do not have anything against it, it is more like that: Once we make some of the other decisions on how we are going to handle items, we will decide whether or not that warrants an inclusion. But, for the most part, i think we are generally for it!

in Diablo.de: When a character dies, will it lose gold and experience like in Diablo 2?
Jay Wilson: We have not actually decided on the final death mechanic. I can guarantee that you will not lose experience. We are not urging to big penaltys for death. But we want enough of a penalty to be there, so that death has meaning! Like to lose a little bit time, some kind of decrement... We do not currently have a durability, but some kind of ... a gold cost is actually not so bad. And having the player to waste some time, that is certainly an element. Generally we kind of rely on the effect that players do not want to die. You know, you just do not want to. So there is no real reason to add a further "ding" to them for something happening that was already unfavorable to them. But we have not got our final mechanics on that, yet.

The game's challenges are purported to help players maintain a more positive state of mind resulting in reduced stress and boosted self-confidence. MindHabits is based on more than a decade of research and findings by Dr. Mark Baldwin of McGill University.

Geneforge 5 Beta Testers Needed

Spiderweb Software is in need of dedicated beta testers for the Mac version of Geneforge 5: Overthrow. The fifth and final chapter to the fantasy RPG series will once again take players to the world of the Shapers and Rebels for a final showdown to determine which side will achieve victory.

General requirements to participate as a beta tester:

1. You must have a reliable internet account, capable of E-mail and of downloading large files. Updates can be over 20 MB and need to be downloaded reliably.
2. You must be able to write and converse coherently in English.
3. You must be able to actually spend time on testing, and, even if you don't find bugs, you need to be able to frequently give us reports on your progress in the game.

Apple Games Interviews Will Wright

Apple Games has taken a break from reviewing game titles to bring readers an interview with legendary game developer Will Wright, the designer responsible for the blockbluster Sim City and The Sims franchises as well as the upcoming Spore. The article traces Wright's history and the story of his success in the game world.

As Wright tosses intriguing concepts back into our society through his games, the ripples they leave behind often strike him in unusual ways. For example, he’s heard about many mothers playing The Sims with their daughters and having life discussions. And he found that the ability to create content and tell stories, which became a key feature in The Sims 2 (2004), was important to The Sims players.

Storytelling is also a crucial element of his science-fiction simulation Spore, which he says is the culmination of lessons learned from the development of many past games, in particular SimCity, The Sims, and SimEarth. “It will be interesting to see what comes out of the ability to share stories with Spore,” Wright says. “That sort of thing is a yardstick for measuring a game’s success now. At the end of the day, I’d like to see a diverse range of tales.”
