Apple Unveils iPhone 2.0, iPhone 3G
12:16 PM | Eddie Park | 11 comments

Steve Job's keynote presentation at this year's WWDC unveiled the long awaited official details on both the new OS, dubbed iPhone 2.0, and the new iPhone itself, referred to as the iPhone 3G.

Of interest on the gaming front are a few points. First up is a new App Store, which allows 3rd party developers to easily distribute their wares to iPhone owners and includes features like automatic updates. Sega's Super Monkey Ball was demoed, and now features over 100 levels. Pangea Software also demoed some iPhone games, including Enigmo, which makes full use of the touch-screen controls, and Cro-Mag Rally, in which the iPhone's motion sensitivity was used for steering.

The iPhone 3G is now official, and includes long-awaited features like GPS and, of course, 3G support. It's also reportedly slimmer and features improved audio. Of particular note is the new pricing scheme, with the 8GB model going for $199, and the 16GB model going for $299, which will be available in both white and black colors.

iPhone 2.0 will be a free update for current iPhone owners, and $9.99 for iTouch folks. As for the iPhone 3G, the availability date is set for July 11th in 22 countries.

EVE Online: Empyrean Age Trailer & Screenshots
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Worthplaying has released a new trailer and a collection of screenshots for Empyrean Age, the upcoming expansion for CCP Games' sci-fi MMO EVE Online. The expansion will introduce a faction ranking system, new militias, fresh agents pertaining to the massive conflicts, a dynamic new structure of system occupancy, and a whole new region in space: "Black Rise."

The Empyrean Age brings an explosive end to the fragile peace that has existed for one hundred years between the four central races of New Eden and entices players to pledge fealty to their faction of choice to gain fame, wealth and power.

EVE Online: The Empyrean Age incorporates elements of fiction that will be introduced in a novel by the same name, slated for a June 19th release, by Tony Gonzales. The author of many popular web-novellas and short stories, Gonzales' novel takes the reader throught ime and space, bridging the passage of time between the somewhat harmonious setting of New Eden as it exists for players now to a world of broken alliances on the brink of war
The Empyrean Age expansion is scheduled to be released tomorrow, June 10th. Head over to the site listed below to learn more.

A History Of Computer Role Playing Games
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

1UP.com has published a new article tracing the history of computer role playing games. Starting first with Gary Gygax's pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons game, the article then delves into the computerized dungeon era to follow the path of the genre from early successes like Ultima to current hits like the Neverwinter Nights series.

It would take years for a stand-alone, nonmainframe RPG to appear. That happened in 1980, when 19-year-old Richard Garriott released Akalabeth.

Programmed for the Apple II, Akalabeth was a technological innovation: With its Spartan wire-frame visuals, it was the first true graphical RPG. Its story, however, was still rudimentary: The user played Lord British's exterminator, ridding dungeons of a dead wizard's evil monsters.

Akalabeth sold tens of thousands of copies -- an astronomical number at the time -- and Garriott followed up that success with Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness.

Penny Arcade Adventures Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

GameShark recently published a new review of Hothead Games' Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode 1. Based on the characters from the Penny Arcade comic strip, the episodic adventure game allows players to create a character and step into an adventure with Tycho and Gabe. GameShark gave the game a letter grade of B.

From the review:

The support characters arenít the only characters with special attacks as you, Gabe and Tycho all have ďOverkillĒ attacks that are triggered by mini-games. For example, Gabrielís attack has you mashing buttons to fill up a vertical bar. Once full, the bar descends and you press A again to stop the bar within the specified area. Getting the timing just right unleashes the full amount of extra damage as well as gives the opportunity to kill an enemy with the Overkill attack, netting you an Overkill bonus that grants you a permanent damage boost stat increase. If more than one characterís Overkill attack is charged up you can choose to forego the mini-games and go into a combo attack instead.

The combat is fast paced and well implemented. At the beginning, keeping an eye on your party and applying healing items appropriately is essential however you soon hit a point where itís rare to die. This results in a situation where battles arenít frustrating, but at the same time theyíre not particularly challenging either. Itís still fun though, and once you get used to the combat you can learn how fights ebb and flow so that you constantly are attacking and never giving your enemies the chance to cause damage.

Neverwinter Nights Design Doc Released?
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

NWVault is hosting what is purported to be a copy of an original design document for Neverwinter Nights. The detailed write-up includes a history of the principal villain, descriptions of each major chapter in the game, and a list of quests. Players of NWN may find the storyline differences of particular interest.

Not all of Moragís once-great empire entered into the Sourcestoneís sleep, however. As she fled north, she did so with her royal house. With her came her petty warrior-kings, her high priestesses with their shriveled and fading glory, her loyal servants, her precious Wordslaves. These became the ancient ones, the wretched ones, the exiled Old Ones who took shelter from the cold in the northlandís rocky depths. Meanwhile, to the east rose the human empire of Netheril that drew its very power from the rites and incantations first discovered and scribed by the high priestesses of Moragís reign. Yet quietly and slowly, the Old Ones had their revenge and they lured the great mages of Netheril to secret schools founded in the west. There, the Old Ones trained them and made them powerful, fattening them for the slaughter. By feeding on the blood of the mages, the Old Ones drank their power, building their own strength and rendering themselves safe from the ravages of time. The centuries passed and Netheril fell to its own vanity and thus was founded the city of Illusk, again a home to great magics on which the Old Ones could feed. Then fell Illusk at the hands of the Elven Lord Halueth Never and so the Old Ones waited patiently until their hunger overtook them. Thus was Luskan founded and the Arcane Brotherhood that is so entangled in its history. Power there, and magic, and under it all, behind a thick veil of terror, are the Old Ones, forgotten but not gone, waiting for their prophesied Awakening.
