IMG Reviews Tomb Raider Anniversary
7:06 AM | Marcus Albers | 1 comment

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of the latest game in the long-running series, Tomb Raider Anniversary from UK publishing house Feral Interactive. Here's a clip from the review:

Tomb Raider Anniversary actually has an interesting history, because two separate anniversary games were in concurrent but independent development, with Eidos apparently leading the game's original developers up the garden path: Core Design, creators of all the original Tomb Raider games, was quite far along the road to a remake of the original game when it was discovered that Eidos would be publishing a separate 're-imagining' (rather than 'remake') of the first game by Legend producers, Crystal Dynamics. One can only feel sympathy for the Core Design team, and be intrigued by their game-that-never-was. Yet fortunately, there is no denying that Crystal Dynamics' completed game is both a splendid creation in its own right and an excellent tribute to the seminal original.

Anawiki Games have released a video trailer for their latest game, Runes of Avalon 2, which demonstrates the gameplay, music, and graphics of the game. Along with the trailer, Anawiki has also released some tips and tricks for those that want to become masters of the Rune Matching game.

Runes of Avalon 2 is a puzzle-driven game which offers a unique combination of match-three and Tetris mechanics. It features over 100 challenging levels, 6 power-ups, 4 powerful spells, two minigames, and three game modes with many variations within a quest.

"We wanted to show some of the cool features in our games that players might not be aware of when playing the demo version," said Roman Budzowski, game producer at Anawiki Games. "The trailer also shows how to use those features, such as the Amulet of Spells, which later shortens the learning curve and improves gameplay."

A "Tips and Tricks" page is also now available for those that might need a little help, or those simply looking to improve upon their scores. Over 40 tips and tricks on two pages of text describe some lesser known features that let players not only achieve better scores, but get maximum effect from matches and available spells.

Virtual Apple Stores In The Works?
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Macworld UK recently published an article examining a recent Apple patent. The patent describes a 3D virtual online shopping environment which would allow customers to explore the goods for sale and even interact with one another.

The patent basically describes an online shop in which different areas of what's available are depicted in a 3D space, in which customers can see goods for sale and, if they choose to do so, interact with other customers on the virtual shop floor.

There's other potential usages, the filing claims: "For example, if an author has been invited to participate in a live chat hosted by the Acme store, an icon of the book may appear in [a region] alerting customers (in all departments) that a special event is occurring."

The patent points out that a drawback of shopping online is that the "experience can feel sterile and isolating". The patent argues that shoppers looking at what's on offer in online stores are less likely to look around and window shop, so the creation of an immersive experience may help sell more goods.

Blizzard Says No To Uwe Boll
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 11 comments

An MTV Movie Blog post recently revealed Blizzard Entertainment's reaction to a request by infamous film director Uwe Boll to adapt World of Warcraft into movie form. According to Boll, Blizzard's Paul Sams emphasized the company's particular disinterest in having him purchase the movie rights.

But if you’re not going to make a faithful adaptation, why make an adaptation at all? Apparently, the folks over at Blizzard wonder the same thing, since they practically laughed Boll out of their offices when he approached them about making a World of Warcraft adaptation, the director confessed.

“I got in contact with Paul Sams of Blizzard, and he said, ‘We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you,’” Boll revealed. “Because it’s such a big online game success, maybe a bad movie would destroy that ongoing income, what the company has with it.”
