Mia, the mouse and star of Kutoka's award-winning edutainment software series is celebrating ten years of adventures and learning. To kick off the celebration, Kutoka is launching a new title, Mia Reading: The Bugaboo Bugs!. Targeted at five to nine year olds The Bugaboo Bugs! focuses on literary skills by combining an adventure game with educational activities that are in sync with the educational curriculum from kindergarten to grade three

The Bugaboo Bugs! is about some incredibly troublesome bugs! Mia lives in a charming Victorian house where her family has lived for generations. The house has recently been invaded by pests—the Bugaboos. These disrespectful, noisy and uncivilized bugs are going to attract the attention of the humans, and if they are noticed, the exterminators will be called and everyone will be put out on the street! The Bugaboos must go! And Mia needs the player’s help to find a way to get them to stay out of site.

Mia’s Reading Adventure has been designed to support a school’s curriculum from kindergarten to grade three, and includes 12 exciting literacy skills activities each with four distinct age-appropriate levels of difficulty. Topics covered include associating images to words, punctuation, phonics, rhymes, spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, reading comprehension, word recognition, verb tense, adverbs, following instructions, and much more! There is an easy to consult progress report and The Bugaboo Bugs! educational activities are seamlessly integrated into the story. There is also a feature that allows the player to go directly to the activities. But of course, it is the adventure that makes a Mia game so special!
Minimum System Requirements:
Macintosh OS X, 10.4, 10.5
Processor: G4 - 1Ghz
RAM: 512 MB
Video & Sound: Standard Macintosh
DVD-ROM Drive: 4X

Penumbra: Black Plague Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

GamingExcellence recently posted a review of the Windows version of Penumbra: Black Plague. The final chapter in the Penumbra story will thrust players into a creepy environment of horror where they must solve puzzles to survive. GE gave the game a score of 7.8 out of 10.

From the review:

You’ll solve many of these puzzles by interacting with the environment in very natural-feeling ways. Opening drawers and switching levers isn’t about simply pressing a ‘use’ button. Everything is done with a single mouse click, and then moving like you naturally would. Opening a drawer means grasping it and pulling it out; pulling the level means taking it and pulling it down. It’s really quite an immersive system and it gives you a level of interaction with the environment that just feels natural, and keeps you in the atmosphere without constantly reminding you that you are, in fact, playing a game.

This brings me to the real star of Penumbra: its great atmosphere and sense of immersion. There’s no heads-up display showing your health or anything other information; all you see your flashlight/glowstick/flare, the only shield you have against the pitch black. Likewise, music is rare and saved only for some important events, so expect to hear every scrape, every bump, every footstep, and every murmur in the shadows. At one point in the game, something – not going to spoil what – happens, and after that, you start to question whether or not what you’re looking at is the truth.
