Inside Mac Games Reviews Command and Conquer 3

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of the highly anticipated port of Electronic Arts' real-time strategy title Command & Conquer 3 - Tiberium Wars. The title represents the first of four titles from EA released for Intel Macs using Transgaming's Cider porting technology. Here's a clip from the review:

One of the key elements at issue with the release of C&C3 was the use of TransGaming's Cider to port it to the Intel-based Macintosh platform. This has been discussed on the Web quite a lot, including in an article by Tunzer Deniz here. For publishers such as EA, Cider was expected to offer a low-cost way to bring PC games to the Intel Macs, potentially increasing the opportunities for Mac gamers. But the question in everyone's mind has been how will Cider-ports actually play?

Custer Stroggifies Your Desktop

With the recent update on the status of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars from Aspyr Media, the excitement for its release is apparent in my inbox. As always, I enjoy honoring your requests, so this week we go back to war. I was able to create this week's wallpaper with the help of Aspyr Media. I simply entitled this selection, "Stroggify" after our would-be conquerors, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)

Battle For Wesnoth Updated

The freeware fantasy strategy game Battle for Wesnoth was recently updated. The update brings the game to version 1.3.8 and introduces a variety of bug fixes and changes. BfW is open source and available for a large variety of platforms, including Mac OS X.

Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.

Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir... step into the boots of a young officer sent to guard a not-so-sleepy frontier outpost... vanquish a horde of undead warriors unleashed by a foul necromancer, who also happens to have taken your brother hostage... guide a band of elvish survivors in an epic quest to find a new home.

Pirates Of The Caribbean Online Delay Discussed

WarCry Network recently posted a new interview with VR Studio's Mike Goslin about Pirates of the Caribbean Online. The MMO will feature real-time combat, ship to ship battles, and a variety of other pirate themed activities. The interview explores the reasons behind the game's delay, and some of the features players can expect.

Goslin explained that the team really needed to polish "that last 10%" and for that reason they delayed. He has confidence in the game's features, but felt much of it required work, lest it be inaccessible to the average gamer. The latest version of the game, he promises, has a completely overhauled user interface. When WarCry saw the game earlier this summer, it was apparent that things had gotten a bit convoluted and to their credit, they took the time necessary to fix them.

On top of simplified UI, they also refined the control systems and reworked the quest system so that people can see more clearly what is expected of them. Like most games, they also found that their first crack at the tutorial needed work and completely rebuilt it.

Performance is also something that is especially dear to a game that seeks a broader, non-traditional audience that only a license like theirs can provide. They wanted PotCO to work on extremely low-end, value PCs. It took a lot of work, but they believe they've made it happen.

At the end of September, Goslin expects the game to hit Open Beta and hopes people will judge the game on its own merits. It's not just skewed to an older audience, it's also bigger, more complex and has more to do than Toontown.

Age Of Empires III Reviewed

MacNN has released a review of Age of Empires III, the third incarnatio of the popular real time strategy series. AoE III uses the colonization of the New World as a backdrop for improved graphics, realistic physics, and a new campaign. MacNN gave AoE III a score of 4 out of 5.

From the review:

One evening, I intended to sit down and write this review only to find myself sucked into an epic battle with my two sons against an Expert level computer opponent. Of course, we waged this battle over our home network, but the game also supports online networking through GameRanger. We used a Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5, a 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4, and a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook. All three ran the game with ease, with the graphic display speed being the obvious major difference between them. Even on the MacBook, the well-defined and detailed graphics were actually quite satisfactory.

The objective of each game is to move through a series of five ages, each giving you new military units and economic upgrades that increase your options and chance of success against human or AI opponents. Every civilization has its own Home City, which offers different improvements. For example, the Spanish have a strong military, particularly their hand infantry and cavalry. They also earn early Home City shipments, allowing them to attack early. The British on the other hand spawn villagers faster and have one of the strongest economies in the game. Furthermore, the British military is formidable but takes longer to build. There are eight civilizations in all, and each offers a slightly different style of play. There are also a multitude of different maps upon which you can build your empire, allowing you to emphasize land or naval battles.
