New Avernum 5 Screenshots
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Spiderweb Software has released three new screenshots for Avernum 5. The game is the next installment in the popular Avernum RPG series. The game will feature gameplay improvements, an intricate plot, and larger battles.

From the Avernum 5 website:

The surface world is ruled by the Empire. Its power is absolute. Its control is unchallenged. And, as a soldier of the Empire, you have a good, comfortable life ahead of you. But then a rebel named Dorikas tried to assassinate the Empress, and everything went wrong for you.

The villain fled somewhere into Avernum, an underworld nation of eccentrics, misfits, and barely civilized monsters, most of whom hate the Empire. And that is where you are going. You must find Dorikas, while dealing with spies, betrayal, and assassins at every turn.

The enemy is waiting for you. You will only survive his attention with the help of these strange cave dwellers. If, of course, they don’t kill you first.

Avernum 5 is planned for a Winter 2007 release. Click over to the site below to check out the new screens.

Wrath of the Lich King Previewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

IGN has posted a short preview of Wrath of the Lich King, the upcoming second expansion for the ever popular World of Warcraft. WotLK will add a host of epic content to the existing game world. Players will be able to take their characters to level 80, explore a vast new continent, and battle other high-level heroes to determine the fate of Azeroth

First, we got a little more background on the land of the Lich King, Northrend. This frigid continent was created during the War of Ancients and the geography reflects its origins. We'd already heard about the Furbolg and Viking-esque Vraikul who make the land their home but they're not the only ones who are there.

Northrend is also home to the Nerubians, a race of underground spiders, and the walrus-men creatively named the Tuskar. Though you can guess how hostile the race of underground spiders are, the Tuskar are, by contrast, very pleasantly neutral, befriending characters of all races, creeds and orientations. We also learned that The Venture Company will be making an appearance in Northrend as they work to deforest the Furbolg home of Grizzly Hills.

After hearing about the new zone, we were anxious to give it a try so we logged in and jumped a ship to Daggercap Bay in the Howling Fjord. Boat travel to Northrend is exactly the same as anywhere else in Azeroth, but the view is definitely different. Rather than simply pulling up a relatively smooth coastline, the trip to Daggercap Bay sees your ship negotiating a narrow canyon that leads from the open sea to the large and relatively tranquil bay within.

Head over to the site below to read the rest of the preview.

Banshee Update For StarCraft II Site
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled more information about the new Banshee unit for the Terran race in the upcoming StarCraft II. The update offers a brief history of the Banshee and a screenshot of the unit in action. StarCraft II will return players to the conflict between Zerg, Protoss, and Terran several years after the end of Brood War, offering a strong single player storyline and Blizzard's signature multiplayer experience.

Many experiments with dedicated air-to-ground attack have been undertaken by the terrans. Various dead-end approaches were tried and then discarded: ordnance packages for dropships, remote semi-autonomous drones, and airborne artillery platforms, to name but a few. Such continual compromises eventually led to retrofitting variants of the Wraith space superiority fighter with a belly-mounted burst laser to fulfill the role in the short term. Even so, the abiding problem of finding truly effective air-to-ground support below battlecruiser weight remained.

Procyon Industries has been the latest to tackle the problem by approaching it from a different direction. Instead of attempting to adapt existing aircraft designs for a role they were never intended to fulfill, the technicians at Procyon designed the banshee from scratch. As a planetary craft, the banshee wouldn't need high-powered engines to achieve escape velocity and fight in orbit, so instead technicians fitted it with economical twin turbofans. Any air-to-air weaponry was deemed unnecessary: the banshee would only hunt ground targets. Thus, it was equipped with powerful air-to-ground cluster rockets.

The resulting aircraft was cheap, relatively robust, and well suited to its intended role of making tactical strikes on the battlefield. The banshee was adopted by the Dominion as a light infantry support craft that could be quickly transported to any world. Despite the banshee's many fine traits, Dominion commanders initially derided its apparent inflexibility and relegated banshees to a minor support role in backwater militias.

However, with the benefits of being lighter and much more mobile than a siege tank, the banshee soon gained itself a fearsome reputation in spite of its detractors. It particularly shone as a jungle and desert fighter that could hunt across vast areas of inhospitable terrain and suddenly strike at unsuspecting enemy forces. The surprise attack value of the banshees has been further enhanced by modifications that allow them to mount salvaged Wraith cloaking fields, enabling banshees to hit and run even where the enemy dominates the skies.
