StarCraft II Q&A Round 8

Blizzard has posted more answers to fan questions about the upcoming StarCraft II. The eighth Q&A batch is now available on Blizzard's StarCraft forums. The sequel to the still popular original StarCraft, SC II will introduce new multiplayer action and pick up the Zerg, Terran, and Protoss storylines a few years after the end of BroodWar.

1) Will there be upkeep in StarCraft II?
No, there will not be.

2) What will be the highest number of upgrades for the shields, armor or weapons?
Currently, the highest number of upgrades per weapon/armor/shield type will be 3, which is the same as the original StarCraft. The values of each upgrade will be determined through much balance testing.

3) Will the StarCraft II Editor be easy or hard to use?
Blizzard game editors have always been aimed at empowering the community to create a huge variety of fun game modes and maps. This editor will be no different.
The editor for StarCraft II will be very easy to use for new players to create their own custom maps and games. Furthermore, this editor will have many more scripting options available to players, to allow for even more player creativity in their maps beyond that seen in prior RTS titles such as Warcraft III.

4) Will the Zealot charge ability cause more damage on the initial attack than on all other attacks?
No, the Zealot charge will close the distance between the Zealot and its target, which will be a significant advantage in many situations, compared to a Zealot without the upgrade, but will not actually give it more attack power or an initial stronger attack.

5) When selecting the Phase Prisms I noticed they have a 3rd, yellow meter below their shields and health. Is this meant to represent mana or storage capacity (warp-in capacity)?
This bar represents the Phase Prisms storage capacity, as it also serves as an aerial transport unit.

Apple Games Features The Sims Bowling For iPod

Apple Games' latest game feature examines The Sims Bowling for iPod, EA's latest title for the multimedia device. The article offers an overview of the Bowling's features as well as some tips and tricks to help players improve their game.

Don L. ó Sims 2 fans know heís Don Lothario, the Pleasantview Romeo ó loses his cool on his first frame ten roll, throwing a ball that only takes out two pins. He also fails to knock down the eight pins that would have earned him a spare and given him a third turn. Despite a weak finish to the game, he manages to eke out a victory, but all was not lost, because you improved your Simís aspiration level enough to unlock the titanium bowling ball for sale at the SimShop. It will definitely improve your game.

But first itís time to head home, where your Simís house is quickly becoming the place for parties: youíve adorned it with a widescreen TV, an air hockey table, and a dance floor, among other cool stuff. While there, you receive an offer for a better job. You accept, earning extra Simoleons to spend at the bowling alley. Your Sim aspires for nothing more than friendship, so itís time to hit the lanes again.

Winter Wolves: Magic Stones UB Update, Game Editor Coming

The latest Winter Wolves newsletter revealed a few bits of news for the Magic Stones RPG card game. A new Universal Binary update has been released, bringing the game to version 1.2.3 and now requiring at least OS X 10.3.9 to run. The update improves performance on all Macs but may not work with previous saved games.

Here's a list of changes in the update:

∑ added a new warning before battle starts in Gather Artifact mode: if your inventory is full, and the selected place contains an artifact, the game will tell you to make room for it on the inventory to avoid losing it
∑ fixed a bug that was causing artifacts to show only after battle and not in the map overview
∑ fixed a bug that was causing mana value to go negative if Mannaz spell fizzled too many times
∑ fixed a bug that was causing all avatars to end their turn when casting Othila, Teiwaz and Kennaz spells

Important Note:
We updated the game to Universal Build requiring minimum Mac OS X 10.3.9, however the old savegames aren't guaranteed to work with the new universal build. We apologise for this in advance and recommend to start a new game from scratch.
The universal build though won't have any future savegame problems and will also run faster on your Mac PPC/Intel.

The second Magic Stones news update is the announcement of the last free expansion pack for the game. Titled Lost Temples Island, the expansion will add a new quest and the fifth avatar stone of Life and Spirit. The expansion should be available this Fall.

Finally, Winter Wolves revealed work on an editor for the game to give users the ability to add their own quests.

Probably we will release an editor for the game so users will be able to add their own quest, but at the moment of writing we're unable to say if will be included in this expansion as well or if will be released later (probably next year).

Avernum 5: Chitrach Hordes, Beta Coming Soon

In a post on the Spiderweb Software forums Jeff Vogel recently offered a new update on the changes and additions fans can expect in the upcoming fifth game in the popular Avernum RPG series. The game will feature gameplay improvements, an intricate plot, and larger battles.

The world is over half done. I plan to start the beta-testing very soon. It is still looking possible for my desired November release.

The Archmage Solberg (and familiar) are in the game. Solberg has a much larger role this time around (though I was already planning this when I put Solberg into Avernum 4), and writing him was very time-consuming and tiring.

Though not near as bad as writing Anama. Doing an Anama town is basically doing two towns at once (in the faith and outside the faith versions).

I am currently working on an area that contains lots of chitrachs. I am handling this monster much differently than in Avernum 4. The basic model doesn't poison. They are in fewer sections. And I wanted to bring in a Starship Troopers feel to them. If you fight one, you're fighting a lot more, probably coming through the walls. Area-effect damage is good.

Though, as in Avernum 4 (and, for that matter, 2 and 3), most of the chitrach stuff is completely optional.
