The Broken Hourglass Races Revealed

Planewalker Games has updated its website with new information about the company's upcoming RPG, The Broken Hourglass. The latest update explains how race impacts a character's stats and abilities by breaking down the five non-human races and explaining the different bonuses and penalties enjoyed (and suffered) by each.

There are six different racial profiles for characters in The Broken Hourglass. Humans make up the majority of the population in most Tolmiran territories. Mixed in with their society are the Illuminated, the Feyborn (half-elven, half-human), and three different cultural spinoffs of the old Ilvari race: assimilated elves, Cella, and the Verai.

Mechanically, races in The Broken Hourglass are assumed to have a net value of zero—that is, the total magnitude of the positives on a creature's expected challenge should be completely offset by the total magnitude of the negatives. To keep the accounting simpler and more obvious, humans, as the dominant race of the realm, are given no racial bonuses or penalties to any statistic. Most of the other races have a bonus to one of the four primary attributes (Strength, Agility, Toughness, Judgment) as well as a penalty to another, and various modifiers to secondary skills and abilities. Some races receive traits as part of their racial makeup.

Macgamestore.com and Big Fish Games have released Azada, a casual puzzle game for OS X. In the game players must help Titus escape a haunted room by solving a series of puzzles. The game offers over 40 unique puzzles, 5 master-level puzzles, and unlockable levels.

Trapped in a haunted room by his great-uncle, the adventurous Titus has asked you to help release him from the magical spell. To do this, you must solve the most mysterious puzzles of Azada. Crack the series of puzzles and fill in the missing pages of the enchanted book to free Titus from his prison.

Redline Racing League Featured In Ambrosia Times

The Ambrosia Times newsletter recently featured an article on the Redline Racing League, a collection of Redline fans who compete to see who is the fastest driver on the track. Fan made additions to the game, including new car types and new tracks, have allowed for greater racing variety for participants.

This is the Redline Racing League, or RRL for short. The RRL is an idea that orginated almost as soon as Ambrosia released Redline to the world. The first incarnation of this group occured in late 2006, and was created without any assistance from Ambrosia or it's crew. Set up by the fans, for the fans! This first league was rather short and simple with only a few races with 4 to 5 racers. Quick, dirty, great fun and over sadly too quickly. But, the idea wasn't dead, it was simply ahead of it's time. This sim-only racing setup suffered from a small player base and a limited choice of tracks and cars. But, with the explosive interest from the Mac racing community and Ambrosia foresight to include the ability for fans to expand upon the game, it was only a matter of time where this would all come together. 
 
The league appeared to sit on the back burner for a while, but with the release of hi-grade, hi-quality plugin tracks like Pembrey, Brands Hatch, and Bardagi Road, there was finally a large enough mix of stock tracks and add-on tracks to allow for a much longer season with a great deal of racing variety.  
 
Redline has also gone from the nineteen built-in game cars to more than forty cars in at least six classes, depending on who's counting and who's racing.

Epic's Steve Polge Discusses Unreal Tournament 3

BeyondUnreal recently posted a new interview with Epic's Steve Polge about the eagerly awaited Unreal Tournament 3. The interview answers a variety of questions about game types, weapons, and Epic's efforts to prevent cheating in UT 3.

BU: What are some of the UT 2004 DM and CTF weapon and gameplay challenges that you will address with UT 3?

SP: We’ve gone to a lot of effort to improve the movement feel, and the changes we’ve made to movement have also allowed us to make the scale of the environments more believable without cramping gameplay. We’ve done some tweaking to weapons to make sure that projectile weapons and hit scan weapons are appropriately balanced. Replacing the shieldgun with the impact hammer also addressed balance issues with flag running in CTF.

BU: Are there any new weapons being planned for non-vehicle gametypes? how about vehicle gametypes?

SP: Most of the returning weapons have significant new functionality. For example, the impact hammer alt fire is a small emp blast that can damage vehicles, or knock power ups off of enemy players. The stinger minigun still has a hitscan primary fire, but the alternate fire shoots large shards which can impale an enemy and pin them to a wall.

The big addition to your arsenal is the deployables, which can both be carried by hand, or deployed from a couple of special purpose vehicles. One example of a deployable is the spider mine trap. When an enemy comes nearby, spider mines emerge from it and scurry after him. In addition, the AVRiL laser guidance can be used to “herd” friendly spidermines, like the spidermine launcher did in UT2004.
