Burning Crusade Shatters Sales Record
7:25 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
Blizzard Entertainment's highly anticipated expansion for World of Warcraft broke the day one sales record for computer games with nearly 2.4 million copies of The Burning Crusade sold. Some of the expansion's notable features include a higher level cap, controllable flying mounts, and a new continent to explore.
Day-one sales totals on both continents were similar, with an estimated total of nearly 1.2 million copies sold on the first day in North America and an estimated total of more than 1.1 million copies sold in Europe within the first 24 hours of launch.* By the end of the first day of availability on both continents, a total of more than 1.7 million players had already logged in and upgraded World of Warcraft to play The Burning Crusade. Blizzard: Burning Crusade Sales Record
"The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead."
"The immediate popularity of The Burning Crusade once again shows that Blizzard consistently delivers what gamers want," said Robert McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop Corp. "In addition to setting a new day-one PC-game sales record at our GameStop and EB Games stores, the expansion garnered more online pre-orders than any other PC game in our company’s history."

Aliens, John Woo, and Stargate: How To Research A Game
7:25 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story
In a recent guest blog post for Game Tycoon game designer Chris Avellone offered his unique insight into the process of researching a new computer game. With equal doses of humor and stick figures, Avellone encouraged those seeking a job in the game industry to immerse themselves in comics, movies, and games.
So my advice for any aspiring members of game development is pretty simple. If you’re a nerd, keep being a nerd. Known for his work on famous RPGs such as Fallout 2 and Icewind Dale, Avellone is one the founding officers of Obsidian Entertainment.
Watch trashy sci-fi movies. Read comics. Watch the entire run of Stargate. Be able to quote lines from Doctor Who until your friends want to murder you. Immerse yourself in the book and movie versions of Lord of the Rings. Study the Matrix. James Bond. The whole range of John Woo movies. Be able to explain the mathematical underpinnings of gun-kata in Equilibrium.
Have fun as your eyes take it all in, but in the storage bin in the back of your brain, record all the details of the construction and history of those franchises. Because chances are, one day you’ll be called upon to use it. Maybe even get paid for it.
The next part is probably going to make mothers across the world cringe, but for future game developers - watching TV is good for you. So are movies. Watch a lot of those. Watch the making-of sections, too. Argue about it with your friends if you want - you may learn even more.
