Geneforge 4: Rebellion Released
7:28 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Spiderweb Software has released Geneforge 4: Rebellion, the latest in the popular RPG series. The game continues the saga as a vicious war engulfs the lands of Terrestria. Players will be able to choose between aiding the rebels or their former masters as they follow one of many possible paths to victory.

From the website:

The Shapers have the ability to create life, in any form they choose. Plants to grow in harsh wastelands, living tools that bow to their will, and powerful monsters to crush any who oppose them. They jealously guard their powers and destroy any who question their will.

Or so they did. Then the revolution came.

Some of their creations, tired of bondage, rose up. Jealous humans, wanting the powers of the Shapers for themselves, joined them. Now the lands of Terrestia are full of ruined, charred fields and maddened, mutant beasts, hunting for prey. There is war. And the Shapers are winning.

You are a rebel, given the power to craft life and sent to fight the Shapers. At least, that is what they told you to do. Will you fight your oppressors? Or will you be tempted by the incredible rewards they offer you in return for switching sides? You have the ability to steer history. What will you choose?
Head over to Spiderweb's site to download the demo.

iPoker 4.0 Released
2:58 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Scenario Software today announced the release of iPoker 4.0, a complete rewrite of the game that now includes Universal Binary support for Mac OS X. For a limited time, the version 4.0 is a free upgrade for iPoker 3 customers.

Here's more from the web site:

For a limited time, this is a free upgrade for iPoker 3 customers.

Universal Binary version runs natively on newer Intel-based Macs and older PowerPC-based Macs. If you're curious, iPoker 4 is built with Xcode and iPoker 3 was built with CodeWarrior.

Converted from Pascal (a procedural language) to C++ (an object-oriented one). This constitutes a major rewrite of code that is as much as 20 years old, and it lays the groundwork for future work.

New Quartz graphics in the Standings window. This is just the start of a migration away from QuickDraw.

Improved HTML-based report windows (using Web Kit now).

Experimental French localization. I just used SYSTRAN so this will probably be amusing to those who speak French. If you're fluent in English, another major language and poker jargon, let's talk.

Hundreds of minor improvements.

Please note that due to the scope of this project, the goals of iPoker 4 are modernization and parity with iPoker 3's feature set. Please use the Send Feedback command on iPoker's Help menu to submit any bug reports.

This version:

Requires Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) or later.

Still uses iPoker 3 Activation Codes.

Will not interfere with an iPoker 3 installation.

Does not include the wooden Table Surface options, because Mac OS X 10.4 does not yet correctly byte-swap large 'ppat' resources on Intel-based Macs. (This bug has been reported to Apple.)

To check out iPoker 4.0, head over to Macgamefiles.com to download the game.

To enter, simply request a free contest version of Unity Pro, the Mac-based cutting-edge game development tool, or use any 3D development tool to enter.

“iDevGames' mission since its founding has been to educate and motivate Mac game developers, as well as to attract new developers to the Mac platform. Entrants in our previous game development contests, uDevGames and OMG, have produced amazing games and can now be found working on AAA titles around the world. Unity is being used by game developers such as Codemasters and Freeverse, in game design education, and amongst creative visualization professionals.

"We feel strongly about providing the best tools for Mac game development to both the professional and indie game developers. The iDevGames community has a strong track record of producing both cool Mac games, and Mac game developers, so we're excited to partner with them on the 3DU Contest", says David Helgason, CEO of OTEE.

Barefeats: MacBook Core 2 Duo Not Fit For Gaming
2:37 PM | David Chochla | 20 comments

Barefeats has posted a review of the new Macbooks featuring the Core 2 Duo processors. While the Macbooks do very well in CPU intensive benchmarks, it seems the integrated graphics processor is simply not cut out for 3D gaming.

Whether you are doing serious apps with Core Image effects or playing your favorite 3D accelerated game, the 13" MacBook C2D is going to spoil your day. Even the PowerBook G4 plays games faster than the 13" Macbook C2D.
