Armado Video, Company Seeks Beta Testers

Tricky Software has released a promotional video of their upcoming game Armado. The game, which is being developed for Macintosh and Windows, is an arcade-style game revolving around an Armadillo named Armado. The company also announced it is looking for beta testers for Armado:

The game is coming along nicely and we’re excited to get feedback. Be sure to check it out as you’ll get a really good sense of the game’s pace, look, and playability.

Also, we wanted to let everyone know we’ll be doing a beta soon, so if you’re interested please send us an email with some basic info about your system. Please note that our supported operating systems will be Macintosh and Windows.

Armado for the Mac and PC is scheduled to be released in November.

Arcadrome Reviewed

Macworld's Game Room has posted a review of Arcadrome, an OS X action game from PolyEx. The game involves blasting hordes of alien enemies while collecting energy crystals. The Game Room gave Arcadrome a score of 3.5 out of 5.

From the review:

Every 10 levels (there are 100 in all), you’ll find a new Boss—a larger, more devastatingly powerful alien ship that you’ll need to use your wits and your firepower to compete against. If you make it through, you can also save your game every 10 levels. This features irritates me—I hate being forced into artificial restrictions on when I save my game. Just let me save at the end of each level, or save for me automatically.

Arcadrome is displayed using forced perspective, but don’t confuse this with old fashioned isometric graphics—the game is 3-D. When your ship is at the bottom of the platform, the graphics scale larger to give you the sense that you’re closer to the action, and when you’re at the top, it looks like you’re farther away. All of the game control is done with the mouse, from steering your ship to determining velocity to firing. The game plays better if you have a multi-button mouse, since the second mouse button is used to control your bomb.

Battling Bubbles In Pop-A-Tronic

The latest Slacker's Guide examines Big Blue Bubble's Pop-A-Tronic, an action puzzle game which asks players to quickly match clusters of bubbles as they fall from the top of the screen. Noting the games combination of speed and strategy, The Slacker's Guide recommends Pop-A-Tronic to fans of action puzzle titles.

From the review:

Like any block-clearing game, the player seeks out clusters of similarly colored bubbles as they rain from the top of the screen to clear the level and advance to the next stage. A simple enough premise, Pop-A-Tronic adds some neat touches to a familiar concept. For example, click on an active cluster and it'll burst, removing the bubbles from the level and causing the others to fall. Click on an inactive cluster of less than three identically colored bubbles and the clicked bubble will become scrap, thereby interfering with possible future combinations...

Perhaps the coolest feature of the game and the thing that keeps it from being completely dependent on what pieces fall in what order (something the player has no control over) is the ability to control-click a bubble and move it to any location necessary to complete a combination and clear a cluster from the screen. This addition points the game in two different directions, yet adds to it as a whole; the title becomes a "speed-click" game combined with strategic elements. The two game styles actually mesh well, even if they make the player speed up and slow down their pace at alternate intervals.

Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy Q&A Tonight

Blizzplanet will be hosting a Q&A session tonight with fantasy author Richard A. Knaak about his upcoming first book in the new Diablo Sin War Trilogy. Book 1: Birthright reveals the origins of the world of Sanctuary and its people as well as includes an appearance by Lilith, a villain introduced in the 1.11 patch of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. Birthright takes place three thousand years before the darkening of Tristam and follows the difficulties of a simple farmer caught between the forces of light and darkness as he struggles with newfound powers.

We are going to meet with Richard A. Knaak on a Public Q&A to discuss his latest Blizzard Entertainment project titled Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy. It is your opportunity to ask anything about the book, its plot and anything Diablo-related to its author.

There will be a session to talk about previous Diablo books written by the author, including the recent Diablo: Moon of the Spider ; and previous Warcraft books of his, such as War of the Ancients Trilogy , Warcraft Manga: The Sunwell Trilogy , and Warcraft: Day of the Dragon.

The Broken Hourglass: Modding With WeiNGINE

Planewalker Games has posted new information about The Broken Hourglass, its upcoming 2D isometric RPG. This time Planewalker focuses on the game's mod friendly design with an overview of the WeiNGINE CRPG gamecode which powers The Broken Hourglass. By making extensive use of XML datafiles Planewalker Games has eliminated the need for a toolset.

One of the major design goals of WeiNGINE was to make it easy for developers to create playable material with a minimum of fuss, and without the need for several specialized "editors" to create game content. Instead, almost everything which represents on-screen or behind-the-scenes gamecode is stored in a plaintext XML data file. For Planewalker Games itself, it means that we do not have to spend valuable development time creating and then maintaining a raft of individual file editors, and our designers can create Broken Hourglass material on virtually any computer with access to a common text editor.

This is also of particular interest to modders because it eliminates what in the past has been a learning curve that can take years to overcome. Most game engines optimize their data files for compactness and speed in processing, rendering them machine-readable only. To understand the contents of the data files, one either needed access to development documentation (which many developers are reluctant to provide), or to reverse-engineer the data files and develop browser and editor programs specially suited to translating the game bytecode into human-readable text.
