Heretic Kingdoms Released for Mac OS X

Virtual Programming announced today that their isometric RPG Kult: Heretic Kingdoms is available for Mac OS X. The game features a variety of locations and monsters, along with over 50 quests for players to undertake leading to six different possible endings.

Here are the final system requirements:

Airline Tycoon Universal Binary Patch Released

IMG Interviews Postal's Steve Wik

Today IMG posted and interview with Steve Wik, lead designer on Postal 2. Steve talks about the history of the Postal series, legal controversies, and the Mac audience. From the IMG interview:

IMG: Speaking of game engines, when designing a game, do you keep in mind the technical limitations or cross-platform availability of a game engine and choose technology that will get you the widest possible audience?

Steve Wik: No, I personally try not to get too concerned about that stuff until we’re actually implementing the technology. At the design stage, I try to come up with ideas that will be really cool and fun, and then, if there are issues, we’ll come up solutions. Postal 1 didn’t really have any problems getting onto the Mac. With Postal 2, we were using the Unreal engine, so it was a no-brainer. Once the engine got ported to all platforms, it worked just as well on any platform, so we decided to support everyone. We would like to continue that. With our Mac group, our Mac fans have always been so… grateful that we made a game for them.

IMG: I was expecting you were going to say that we’re a hard group of people to please.

Vince Desi (walking into the room): We’ve always wanted to do Mac support. When Postal 1 came out, there was an immediately negative vibe from some Mac users as well, but only because Mac people can’t be more activist.

Hammering Down Details on Burning Crusade

Ten Ton Hammer has a hands on look at the upcoming World of WarCraft expansion pack. The preview consists of a slew of screenshots of the new features in Burning Crusade such as the Outlands, new races, and the interface with captions underneath each screenshot.

Civ IV: Warlords Reviewed

Gameplanet has posted a review of Civilization IV: Warlords. The expansion pack adds new civilizations, wonders, items, and much more to impress the reviewer to hand Civ IV: Warlords a 4 out of 5 rating.

Each of the new civilizations has its own unique units while overall triremes and trebuchets have been added to units available to all. The trebuchets are designed to be city urban renewal artillery and are particularly effective earlier in the game at taking out units ensconced in a city. All civilizations now have the stable as a city improvement to allow mounted units, and also a monument, which is excellent for increasing your cities' influence in the early game phases.
The Mac version of Civ IV: Warlords is on the way thanks to Aspyr.

Postal III Officially Announced; Windows-Only

Freshly back from their two-week long expedition to Vancouver, British Columbia, to oversee the shooting of the Postal movie, controversial game designers Running With Scissors have officially announced the next addition to the Postal franchise.

The appropriately-named Postal III is currently is early design stage, and is expected to ship to the public in 2008 for both the PC and Xbox 360 platforms.

From their press release: "We started this series back in 1997," recalled RWS CEO Vince Desi, "and while the franchise has grown into an international computer game sensation during that time, it has always been our goal to bring it to the videogame console marketplace. For many years I’ve been asked by gamers around the world when POSTAL will appear on console. I’m so proud to be able to answer our fans' prayers."

Unfortunately for Mac fans, the designers are building the new title on top of Valve's Source engine. Unless things change in the next few years (read: astral plains re-align or hell freezes over), it appears that the new title will not be playable under the Macintosh operating system.

Ultima V: Lazarus Post Mortem

RPG Watch has posted a post mortem interview with the lead designer of Ultima V: Lazarus, a fan made total conversion modification for Dungeon Siege which revisits Origin's original Ultima V. The interview touches on the difficulties involved with mod making, and offers a look at specific design decisions in UV: L's creation.

RPGWatch: The path of joining the Oppression was considerably expanded in Lazarus in comparison to what the avatar was able to do in the original game. How did this come into play and was there any disagreement among team members to allow such a drastic change within the game?

Team Lazarus: Fortunately no, there was never any real argument on this matter. Trying to make the two sides of the conflict feel more real and more active in the world was one of the founding goals of the project, so any team member who disagreed with those goals wouldn’t have been too happy with us. It’s something we were fortunately all on the same page for.

RPGWatch: What was the general consensus on the world building aspect of towns/dungeons and how closely they should be modeled after the original U5 town/dungeon maps? Were there re-designs happening throughout the project for minor adjustments?

Team Lazarus: One of the first things we did in designing this game was to plot out exactly how many new NPCs we wanted to add, and a large part of that decision-making process was a semi-realistic look at what economic needs were not being met in certain parts of the kingdom. For instance, we wouldn’t place a tailor (a profession which didn’t exist in the original U5) in a town immediately next to another town with one, etc. After we’d worked out what new NPCs and shops we wanted, and after we’d established a scale for the entire world (i.e. how long we wanted it to talk to walk from point A to point B in real time), it was just a matter of fitting all the necessary shops and enough houses to hold all the NPCs in a realistic manner, into a given chunk of land. That, combined with trying to hold onto some aspects of the original town layouts, and finally simple aesthetics, resulted in the Lazarus map as you see it today.

HoMM V Mac Screenshot Posted

Helping to alleviate fans' anticipation for Heroes of Might and Magic V, Freeverse Software's developers blog was recently updated to reveal a screenshot of the game running on an iMac. The shot gives a glimpse of the menu screen. HoMM V is the latest in the popular series of fantasy themed turn based strategy games.

Halloween is right around the corner! To get into the spirit, we have a screen shot of Heroes 5 running on a iMac.

There's still plenty of work to be done on the game, but as we march through Rocktober there will be lots of multiplayer games happening in the office. Life is hard for a game designer.

With the release of the closed beta for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade from Blizzard Entertainment it seems this game is on everyone's mind. I was fortunate enough to be included in the closed beta program and it's been a real treat so far. It took all my willpower to take a long enough break from it to honor this week's request. I was able to make this wallpaper with the help of Blizzard Entertainment. I simply entitled this selection, "Crimson", and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)
