New X-Plane 8.50 Beta Available
8:30 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Laminar Research's X-Plane 8.50 Beta-11 is available for download. The beta streamlines the game's code and introduces a host of changes and fixes to the flight simulator program.

Here's a list of some of the changes in the latest beta:

- Various and sundry groundspeed displays now all display groundspeed, not total speed with respect to the ground.
-There is a difference. Groundspeed does not consider vertical component of speed.
- As well, the groundspeed readout in external cockpits should be a bit smoother.

- The "APP" autopilot lites now lite up when engaged.

- New instrument: Sideslip instrument in the 'supplemental' instruments folder. This tells you what your sideslip is in degrees.

- 40 joystick buttons per joystick are now allowed rather than 'just' 30, as before.
More information can be found at the site listed below. The latest beta can be downloaded from Macgamefiles.com.

UT2007 Interview with Mark Rein
10:48 AM | Eddie Park | 4 comments

Computer and Video Games has posted an interview with Mark Rein, VP of Epic. The bulk of the interview focuses on the ongoing development of Unreal Tournament 2007, including how the implementation of some of the new elements to the series came about.

One of the new additions that has the UT community buzzing is the addition of hoverboards. Rein discusses how the idea was conceived:

Well one of the problems we found with UT2004 is if you died and accidentally spawned in a location where everybody had taken all the vehicles you ended up being stuck running as fast as you could on a fairly-long distance - you're out of the game for a long period of time and it's very hard to catch-up if somebody took-off in a vehicle, and we thought It'd be really nice if we could give people the ability to traverse areas of the map two-to-three times faster than they can now. It's not as fast as the Scorpion but it's a lot faster than running on foot.
Rein also talks about the Dark Walker vehicles, the inclusion of blended physics effects, and issues with deciding the new weapon arsenal. Also discussed in some detail is the toolset that comes with the Unreal Engine 3, which he promises will make things available that were barely conceivable in past engine iterations.
