Mac Neverwinter Updated
8:22 AM | Andy Largent | 4 comments

A new beta of Neverwinter Nights for Mac OS X has been posted by Bioware. Version 1.67b4 fixes a large number of issues in the game, as well as adding new creatures and placeable objects.

Here's a snapshot of a few of the changes made in the patch:

  • Added a new setting to the nwnplayer.ini file under [Server Options] "Examine Effects On Creatures=1". If this option turned off then any magical effects on a creature will not appear in the creature description when you examine a creature in the game (Note: DMs will still see the effects on the creature).
  • Added a new setting to the nwnplayer.ini file under [Server Options] "Examine CR On Creatures=1". If this option turned off then the challenge rating of a creature will not appear in the creature description when you examine a creature in the game.
  • Added strings to bow models.
  • Expanded the number of color choices available for Armor, Cloth, Leather, Skin, Hair, Tattoos (affects both character generation and the toolset).
  • For the full details, or to download the update, head over to Bioware's site.

    IMG Reviews Bricks of Atlantis
11:21 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

IMG has posted a review of Bricks of Atlantis, a break-out type game from Mac Joy. Here's a clip from the review:

The game doesn't let you down if you are looking for a new and enjoyable way to spend a few afternoons or kill some time. With over 120 levels contained in ten level packs, including a bonus level pack that will be unlocked when you complete the first ten packs, it should take a while to complete the game. That's not including the fact that all of the level packs have three difficulty levels to master.

    True Combat Mac Version Announced
    10:12 AM | Eddie Park | 4 comments

Macologist has noted the impending release of the next update to True Combat: Elite. A modification for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, the next upcoming iteration, set at version .49, includes the promised Mac support that the TC:E dev team noted last year was coming.

The update also brings a slew of other features, including realistic lighting and textures for maps, new gameplay types, and both widescreen and letterboxed modes.

The current status on TCE is as follows: we have been working on Release Candidate #2 (RC2) since the end of March. The team is hard at work tweaking details to produce the best looking game imaginable on the Enemy Territory engine (not to mention fun, too!)
More information and screenshots can be found at the official TC:E site.

    Apple Features MMORPGs
10:12 AM | Evan Holt | Comment on this story

Apple has posted a nice little round up of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (or MMORPGs for short) available for the Mac. This feature convers such games as World of Warcraft, World War II Online: Battleground Europe, Second Life and A Tale in the Desert II.

This is a great article for those that are curious as to what a MMORPG is and what it entails:

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games let you play with and against hundreds or even thousands of other players over the Internet, engaging in activities that even a solo, offline experience can’t match, since live human beings are more unpredictable than computer-controlled characters. And, as our introduction demonstrates, MMORPGs take place in a wide variety of settings, enabling you to participate no matter what type of game world interests you.

    Burning Crusade Bestiary Updated
8:22 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has updated the bestiary page for The Burning Crusade, the eagerly awaited first expansion for the overwhelmingly successful World of Warcraft. Two new creatures have found their way into the bestiary giving gamers the chance to learn about The Broken, loyal servants of Illidan the Betrayer, and the Rock Flayers, murderous creatures which stalk the Blade's Edge Mountains of Outland.

The orcs of Outland were not the only ones to suffer the Burning Legion's demonic corruption. The Broken, led by the great Akama, fell prey to the demons' sinister influence, and just like the orcs, they too were changed by the corruption. Though they lost some of their former powers, the Broken still present a clear danger to all of Illidan's enemies throughout Outland. It almost seems like a miracle that the Broken somehow managed to preserve their shamanistic heritage, yet no one can say for sure how many of their traditions are still intact. From the safety of the fortified villages the Broken hold in Outland, they lord over their lesser cousins, the wretched Lost Ones.

DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold Reviewed
8:22 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Macworld's Game Room has posted a new review of DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold, a turn based puzzle adventure in which players must help the heroic Beethro find his lost nephew Halph. For Beethro to succeed players must find a way to conquer the 350+ rooms in the game. The Game Room gave DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold 4 out of 5 mice.

    From the review:

Movement in DROD is purely turn-based—each time you hit a directional button on the keyboard, Beethro will move one step. Beethro comes armed with a nasty sword, which is quite helpful, as there are lots of bad guys to smite along the way—he is a smitemaster, after all. There are also traps that he needs to set off using his sword.

One movement or action equals one tick of the clock. So if Beethro squares off against a bad guy and you move him one step forward, the bad guy can also move one step. By the time Beethro is standing face to face with him, you’ll want to swing the sword in the bad guy’s direction, otherwise Beethro is likely to fall in place. There are no hit points or strength points to keep track of—as soon as Beethro makes contact with a baddie or a deadly trap, he's toast.

Fortunately, the game is very forgiving each time Beethro croaks. It’s willing to put you right back where you started when you first entered—after all, this is a puzzle game, not an RPG or an action title. That’s for the better because the puzzles and traps can send you back to square one in a heartbeat—you’ll find that you have to replay certain rooms over and over again until you can find the right combination of moves to get out alive.
