DropTeam Multiplayer Test Ready
8:27 AM | Andy Largent | 5 comments

Battlefront has announced DropTeam, the "real-time, tactical simulation of armored ground combat," is now available for download. This early version is considered a multiplayer test, and it supports Mac, Windows and Linux.

Gamers might remember Battlefront as the creators of the popular war strategy series, Combat Mission. DropTeam takes the things they learned and applies them in a futuristic setting. The demo takes Mac OS X 10.4.5 and a 1.2GHz processor to run.

Other restrictions of the demo follow:

The purpose of this release is to test DropTeam's network functionality with a large number of players. Anyone can play for free in order to help us test DropTeam but this build has the following important restrictions:

1. Single player is disabled. You can only play network games with this release. The full version of the game includes single player skirmish games and a single player campaign.

2. This release only allows you to play 2 scenarios. The full version of the game includes 21 scenarios with more available for free download after release.

3. This is a test release, which means the game isn't finished yet. It definitely still has bugs. We greatly appreciate your help in finding and fixing them all!

For more information, check out the Battlefront site, and head over to Macgamefiles now to download the multiplayer test for Mac OS X.

Firaxis Announces New PC Titles, First Civ IV Expansion
8:27 AM | Cord Kruse | 5 comments

Yesterday Firaxis Games announced three new PC game titles including Civilization IV: Warlords, the first expansion pack for the popular turn based strategy game. The expansion introduces six new scenarios which focus on some of history's greatest military leaders. Players will have the chance to change history with the help of new powerful "warlord" units.

Since its October 2005 release, Sid Meier's Civilization IV has sold over a million units worldwide and was named both PC and Strategy Game of the Year by GameSpot. The expansion pack is loaded with new civilizations, new leaders and more units, resources and wonders that can be used in both single and multiplayer games.
Also announced was a return to the Railroad Tycoon franchise with Sid Meier's Railroads! which puts players on track to building their own railroad empire. The game will feature a variety of scenarios offering the chance to handle all aspects of the rail business, as well as the opportunity to go head to head with other humans online or over a LAN.
"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this game back home," said Sid Meier, Director of Creative Development for Firaxis Games. "Railroads is near and dear to our hearts and we're looking forward to delivering the endlessly fun gameplay experience fans of our games have come to expect."
The final announced title is CivCity: Rome, a new city building strategy game inspired by the Civilization series. Developed by Firefly Studios, in collaboration with Firaxis, CC:R will allow players to attempt to recreate the glory of the Roman empire by transforming a small settlement into a mighty imperial city. Promising "the most detailed look at Roman life ever depicted on a computer screen," the game will offer hundreds of different building types to construct.
"We're very excited to be teaming up with the talented folks at Firefly," said Steve Martin, President of Firaxis Games. "The teams at Firefly and Firaxis have worked hard to ensure that CivCity: Rome has the same depth and quality that gamers have come to expect from a Firaxis title."

"Firefly has a long history with the city building genre," added Simon Bradbury, Director at Firefly Studios. "CivCity: Rome is our latest take on the theme, and with the influence of Civilization, it's certain to be the best yet."
Civilization IV for the Mac should be available soon from Aspyr Media. There is no word yet on the possibility of Civ IV: Warlords, Sid Meier's Railroads!, or CivCity: Rome also making their way to the Mac. Keep an eye on IMG for more information as it becomes available.

Minions of Mirth Q&A Part 2
8:27 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

RPG Vault has posted the second part of an interview with Josh Ritter of Prairie Games about the company's RPG, Minions of Mirth. The game is a unique combination of single player adventuring and massively multiplayer online gaming. The interview delves into the game's features, including discussion of items, guilds, and quests

Jonric: What are the key features and elements of the quest system? Are there many of them, how are they obtained, and what kinds of rewards do they offer?

Josh Ritter: All of the game's quests are scripted by hand, and many of them have multiple stages. The two main quests take you from level 1 to 50 and span the game's zones. There are numerous other class-based and optional side quests. Quest rewards are varied and meaningful, including presence, skills, spells, equipment, and monster templates.

Quests are generally acquired from NPCs. There are also "interactive objects" in the game, which may have quests attached to them, such as an obelisk or coffin. The game features a quest journal and critical quest locations are marked on your 3D world map.
The full interview can be found at the RPG Vault site listed below.

Custer Gets Burning
8:27 AM | IMG News | Comment on this story

This week's desktop, courtesy as always of IMG's own Brad Custer, focuses on the upcoming expansion pack World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade from Blizzard Entertainment which has been greatly anticipated by many in the Mac gaming community.

Here's what Brad had to say:

Since the announcement of the expansion pack World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade from Blizzard Entertainment my inbox has been flooded with emails for eye candy from the upcoming title. Of course I suffer from the need to honor all requests so this week i return the realm you all love so much. I decided to create a desktop based on the new horde race - blood elves. I was able to make this week's wallpaper with the help of Blizzard Entertainment.
Custer's latest is available in a variety of sizes at Custer's Desktops.

MacWorld Reviews Enigmo 2
8:27 AM | Evan Holt | Comment on this story

Peter Cohen from MacWorld has posted a review for Enigmo 2.

Enigmo 2 looks beautiful. The particle effects for plasma are especially eye-catching. And all of the puzzles are colorful and richly detailed against the majestic backdrop of outer space (often orbiting around a planet or star). The sound effects and music are also well matched to the game. The soundtrack is a bit new-age—not my favorite genre—but well suited to the contemplative mood of the puzzles and the ethereal background.
Enigmo 2 is a 3D puzzle game where you construct mechanisms to direct lasers, plasma, and water to toggle switches, deactivate force-fields, and eventually get them to their final destination. It was rated 7.75/10 recently in a review by Inside Mac Games.
