Warcraft 3 Map Making Tutorial
11:35 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has released a tutorial on the fine art of competitive melee map creation for Warcraft III, the third game in the popular fantasy real time strategy series. The tutorial follows the design process from map layout to creep placement and item drops.

When creating the creep camp you will want to make sure that the creep are tucked away from the main roads on the map. When the player is moving around the map he or she should never accidentally agro a creep camp unless the player chooses to engage the camp. It is frustrating for a player if the creeps are always attacking their army when the player is not trying to engage them. Also, you want to make sure that all creep not guarding a goldmine are set to camp mode as this helps prevent the creep from attacking the player unless attacked. Creep that guard goldmines should never be on camp mode because players will be able to fast expand or build towers near the camp without the creep attacking the constructing building.

HOMM V Developer Letters
11:35 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

In the weeks leading up to the PC release of Heroes of Might and Magic V, the developers plan to release weekly letters each dealing with a specific subject. The first letter dealt with the construction of the town interface while the most recent covers the benefits and drawbacks of beta testing.

From Heroes 5 Dev Letter #2:

It seemed quite obvious that we had to include the fans into the development process in some manner. I donít think anyone can be considered as being the ultimate expert on Heroes questions, but having a few dozens or hundred people sending you ideas or feedback helps getting everything into shape.

The risk however, is to get overrun by the feedback, or to give in to all demands. Most of them are contradictory, and quite a part would be conflicting with other decisions or would alter the direction we are giving to Heroes 5. So it is a huge work to integrate these multiple opinions together and mash something out of that. Simply keeping track of the feedback during the closed beta test was a headache Ė but most communities have helped getting summaries out.

Freeverse Software is currently working on the Mac version of HoMM V. For the entire letter follow the link below to the official forums.
